Why heavily armed?
Most of the illegal immigrants aren't carrying artillery. They are mostly weaponless and just want to cross our border illegally. Doesn't require massive firepower to repel that.
The cartels are heavily armed, but aren't about to challenge U.S. Marines to a fight .

There is no way that you know this. You are guessing. Gambling with US lives is not acceptable.
They might actually be involved in raids behind the enemy lines. Pretty sure Delta will start raiding the cartel compounds other there.
They will need some cover in case shit hits the fan other there. Might as well have that ready to go in form of US Marines.

They would if the Marines weren't armed - and they still might.
We don’t know exactly the reason but if there are cartels/ gangs embedded with the people and there is trouble the Military can intervene.
