Before he turned into a stooge for the very people he tried to expose, Carl Bernstein (of Woodward & Bernstein fame/infamy) had an article published in Rolling Stone that exposed the CIA's infiltration into American newsrooms:
He was a stooge first. He was involved in the plot to take down a President before he wrote this. He knew the new guy he was working with (Woodward) was Naval Intelligence.
I still believe that there was no "deep throat", and that they just believed what they were reporting, and used the "deep throat" story as a way to make the story believable. I believe they got lucky. If the story hadn't turned out the way they were reporting it, they would have just claimed that the "deep throat" source was apparently un-reliable. It was a win-win situation for them.
A very good point and very poor wording on my part as you are certainly correct.
Though Bernstein's article and the timing is rather interesting given the timeline. It points to a rather complex relationship between Bernstein and the CIA at the time.

I tend to keep this article at the ready whenever I talk to a Leftist who is skeptical of a controlled/captured mainstream media.
Showing a Leftist this article tend to set off all sorts of mental gymnastics.

Mark Felt.
Everyone involved was CIA or FBI. Burglers, Sources, to Investigators to reporters. It was a coup to bring down a president.
Communists, intelligence, and secret societies. An evil cabal to protect their power.

True.
