They were coming down waaaaay too fast. Hit the tarmac too fucking hard and the landing gear buckled under the stress. Looks to me that they misgauged their altitude
I posted on another thread that we have been stuck in Mexico since Sunday trying to get back to Toronto. A pilot with me says it doesn't look like the pilot flared the plane to slow its decent before touch down and buckled the gear.
Just saw this myself and was getting ready to post too, lol. Beat me to it πππ
Edit to add, it doesn't look to me that the wind had a hand in the crash. π€ Looks like it was either landing gear or because the landing strip was covered in too much snow.
yup, my first thought was wind however I was wrong. Seems like more like a white out effect might have been a factor. I say this as an ex ice road trucker for many years and will testify to blowing snow induce an almost hypnotic state. Did many trips ' on my gut '.
Yeah, it came in steady and all, touched ground the same then suddenly just collapsed to the side as if the landing gear on that side collapsed or hit a pocket/debris and or the wing caught up on snow or something. Scary.
At Calgary Int'l, there is a section of parking specifically for watching the planes come into the two main runways. There's benches and everything. Pretty neat watching the 747's coming in under 100ft above your head.
When I was a kid, a couple of us snuck under a fence at some air force base in Ohio or Indiana. It was night time, so we were very careful not to walk between any tarmac lights and the tower. Anyway, we laid in the grass right at the end of the runway as a huge plane, maybe a C5, came thundering down on us. That plane had to be just a few feet above us when it passed over. We laughed, wondering if the pilots managed to see us as they came in. Probably not, they would be looking down the runway, not for roadkill near the runway. The experience was amazing. Highly recommended.
That does sound like an amazing experience. I bet you still feel that feeling every time you think about it. Life can suck sometimes, but those moments make up for a lot

Odd someone would be filming that exact flight at that exact moment, no?
Not really. Kids and I used to go watch local air port regularly.
Fair
Me too, we even took a picnic
well this was back in day we did not reject a bigmac while watching :))

I can feel the rumble from here!
Kids and I used to stop at pull out next to runway in Prince George almost every time going to city shopping. They loved it for 5-10 mins lol
