So... a liberal acquaintance just posted on her FB account her outrage over a Forest Service employee of 20 years (it was his "dream job") go laid off under the Trump federal reductions.
I didn't respond to her, not wanting to further alienate her, she's a good person other than her virulent liberalism... We almost fell out over the COVID-19 vaxx issue and I'm not into alienating people.
Does anyone here know more details about the Forest Service layoffs and any other reasons besides government reduction?
Many people got laid off due to the probationary of 1 year to 2 years depending on the job. Federal employees make careers out of gov’t jobs, even successive generations within families go into government as a career. My question is if someone moved from one gov’t Department to a different Department for a job whether they get a probationary period in the new position? That could be an explanation. DEI staff are all being terminated in the government within Departments as well.
I also think the Biden Administration BLOATED the federal employment rolls to get fake employment growth numbers for fake economic news coverage.
Resolving door. I remember Grinnell talking about it years ago. Swamp creatures moving from one department to another
Hmmm? So keeping the bureaucracy at a steady level of employees with growth until a person is fitted into a job they can actually do, prevents down turns in government employment & budgets. They can’t fire poor performing employees as it would cause a reduction in a budget. Budgets only increase, rarely if ever decrease. The Federal gov’t bureaucratic culture is to not let poor performing people go. The employee is in essence an accounting gog in the wheel going round and round until retirement. This is the for profit socialist government.

It's a yahoo article but this should answer your question.
So he had many years in government, but on probation in this new position. He was USDA food quality. I think RFK will be managing that department moving forward. My next question is do federal employees get promoted into new positions because of expertise in the mission of the Department or because of their understanding of how government system works? The long probation period is what enables them to learn the basic subject matter of the mission? Basically has to learn about food quality? Could this be why so many additives & pesticides have been permitted in US food production? People lacking the educational background & expertise about food cultivation, production & preservation is taken advantage of by the food conglomerates for profit?
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services Plant Protection and Quarantine.
Going from one Fed agency to another will set a probationary period regardless of time in the system.
Promotions are given based on the agency and how they operate. They're all different.
So Federal employees are fully aware of the risk in changing jobs and being put on probation for 1 or 2 years. Other Presidents have culled employees, this should not be new.
Correct
Couldn't this person simply reapply for their job?
I'm not a federal employee so I can't answer for sure. However, I would guess that yes, they could, and would probably retain retirement and 401a and seniority at the level they had when laid off.
Yes. the US Forestry service is full of fats in brown uniforms who drive around all day on gravel roads collecting a check and not cleaning up the forest of fire material
DEI hires gone too. She may need to learn to code. 🤪🤣
Well. Last I aware. I was under the impression they planned on drastically reducing the amount of Federal Land and Forests. Sell it off for development, resource exploration etc. Less Federal Forest Land. They naturally need fewer Forestry Staff.
Though they may just be laying off excess Management and Desk Riders. Lots of places both public and private sector are overburdened with too many managers and Desk Jockies. Too few grunts who get their hands dirty.
Thanks, that makes the most sense. I had not considered the reduction in federal land holdings.
Some states want to manage the lands themselves or they’ve taken lessons from Newsom and plan to fleece the federal gov’t coffers after “wildfire” season.
Yes!! Not only reduce, but eliminate virtually all Fed land. Why does the Fed govt even own land? Unless it is an occupation by a foreign power under the guise of a Federal government.
I have to say I really enjoy national parks and wouldn't want them privatized. Wondering how this fits in.
You make a good point. The Fed parks are a nice thing.
Desk riders 😄
Every government entity (local, county, city, state, federal) has corruption and needs to be audited and cleaned out. Especially the ones we aren't allowed to touch (military/intelligence) and those that find shelter in the "public service" like PBS/NPR/Social Security/libraries and the beloved National Parks service.
National Parks is just as messed up as all the others but are able to hide behind their innocent facade.
The Federal govt has strict rules of seniority when it comes to lay offs. Something looks off with this one. He was probably fired for cause.
I had a similar rant by a lib person about the National Parks. I don’t know about the National Parks but the forest service and BLM can’t seem to keep up with what’s under their jurisdiction. The Desk Riders picture is what I had in my mind as well. There’s a BLM piece of land near my house and they were going to clear out some trees. Afterwards they came and did a half hearted burn of the branch piles and planted some more suitable species of trees. Most of those trees died and then the employees never came back to check up on them or at least didn’t plant any more replacements.
One of my neighbors works for National Forest, has a cushy sit down at a desk and hand out maps etc. hasn’t been there but under a year, not sure if they have been layed off yet. Honestly they were hired under dei, I know of several people trying to apply for this job for years and somehow neighbor managed to get it, completely unqualified actually.
OK thanks... I'm beginning to suspect that the FS layoffs are partly due to weeding out DEI hires AND because the Dept. of Interior is about to diminish the footprint of federal land holdings. Elsewhere I read that 28% of the US is held by the federal government. What if those millions of acres were turned over to the private sector to exploit for commercial purposes? Think of all the lumber, coal, oil, natural gas, and other wealth that could be exploited right here in America's mainland?!
