China’s crude oil imports come mainly from Russia, IRAN, Brazil, and the United States.
Strangely, China supposedly imports roughly 1.1 Million barrels per day of crude oil from "Malaysia"... but that's way more than Malaysia is even capable of producing. Add to that the oil China supposedly buys from Iraq, Oman and UAE.
In reality, analysts believe that China is relabeling oil from Iran as being shipped from countries like Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Oman to avoid U.S. sanctions against countries doing business with Iran.
China also imports crude oil from Brazil at roughly 498,000 b/d to 755,000 b/d, and from the United States by between 158,000 b/d to 286,000 b/d.
Since China DOESN'T officially receive any oil at all from Iran... they won't mind if some military action removes Iranian oil production from the market, right? Just saying. Iran is producing 3.3 Million b/d... and somebody is buying it. Guess who?
They are called "rare earth" NOT because they are all that rare, it's just that it's difficult to mine and extract them. America has its own rare earth deposits and reserves, and (ahem, take note) Greenland has about an equal amount to the US.
Not even mining the big issue, although they aren't everywhere. But the processing and refining is wickedly nasty and dangerous. North side of the 15 freeway near Las Vegas is a Mountain of tailings from a mine that has been shipping to Chyna for years. Thank You EPA.

Is it not handy to have some assets in the area to interdict such trade?

See this chart for known reserves: https://newseu.cgtn.com/news/2021-04-13/What-are-rare-earth-metals-and-what-are-they-used-for--ZgHxWfrePm/img/bad66209192e4712bb57d55975300d80/bad66209192e4712bb57d55975300d80.jpeg
If China wants to play that way, there are other nations who we can engage with for these materials.
Don’t worry Greenland! Freedom 🇺🇸 is coming!

Good! Now cut off the cash flow into the PRC with big tariffs on their exports here and cancel their visas and send them home.
I bet Russia will be all too happy to pick up that slack.
In his first term Trump opened up some rare earth mineral mines. This will help them.
Mining jobs tend to pay pretty well...
I mean duh. They spent the last 30 years cornering the rare earth market.
Meanwhile in the US we were more concerned with some extinct fish in california or something.
So yes, of course they will do that, that's their leverage vs the US. I expect mining permits to be given for rare earth mining shortly.
And the EPA can go sit in the corner.
Ah ... in the future: And all of a sudden CCP loses control of certain international locations with rare earths. ....
