Fun fact some of the earliest Christian Shrines and even some small churches were associated with Legion Garrisons.
In fact some running theories believe Legionnaires were one of the primary ways Christianity spread across the Empire in the early days.

What happened really is that the Roman soldiers were blinded by a very bright light as Jesus rose from the dead.
Oh yeah. And when the guards lost the body, they were paid to claim that His followers stole the body - while they were sleeping. And how did they know that - if they were asleep???????
The soldiers were not paid to think, they were bribed to ignore evidence. (and apparently higher-up officials were as well!) The Sadducees were prepared to pay bribes as far as they could, since they pretty much ran the temple. (and the temple treasury - can't let evidence for a resurrection get out too far... Seriously!)
