The soldiers were not paid to think, they were bribed to ignore evidence. (and apparently higher-up officials were as well!) The Sadducees were prepared to pay bribes as far as they could, since they pretty much ran the temple. (and the temple treasury - can't let evidence for a resurrection get out too far... Seriously!)
Fun fact some of the earliest Christian Shrines and even some small churches were associated with Legion Garrisons.
In fact some running theories believe Legionnaires were one of the primary ways Christianity spread across the Empire in the early days.
