I'm in my 46th year of paying in and thats with 7 years where I wasn't working (I wasn't on the dole). I retired early and spent most of my nestegg, and returned to work to build it back up. They use today's FICA taxes to pay yesterday's workers, and squandered the Trust fund built on we boomers backs.
Right now, I'm still waiting for the clawback of 3,500 from my SS for going over the limit for Earned income in 2024, They clawed back 8,000 + suspended my check for 5 months in 2024 for 2023 earnings, they clawed back 4,000 in 2023 for my 2022 earnings. Thank God I'm finally at FRA and no more claw back.
So Aside from the clawbacks, they still withhold FICA , and Tax my SS check. Then if I didn't have health insurance threw the wife, I'd have to pay 185 bucks for part B, and either go with shitty Advantage care supplemental which they decide everything, or pay 200-300 for Gap that has a deductible. Then you need a prescription plan too.
Baby boomers got the biggest screwing ever because they raised the FICA taxes to build up the trust fund and let medical charges ascend into absurdity.
All I want is what I paid in for with NO TAXES and no need to take 1/3rd of my SS check for the Medical Industrial Complex
I paid in but have no rights to my money? You have no rights your money. You are liberal and liberals don't deserve any money at all. Wtf you call yourself a professor. You profess ignorance you clown.
There are retired adults that do not need SS but the majarity of seniors rely heavily on it. If you paid SS tax, worked the years required, and of an eligible age, then you are entitled to receive it .
You paid into nothing, you paid a tax while you were working to compensate those who weren't who paid a tax for those who never paid anything when it began.
This is from my Social Security Statement from 1988 not sure what happen to my earlier Statements in the Seventies. I never thought of it as my only retirement plan.
At this time I'm not going to address the misuses of the program I agree partly with what your saying.
Agree or Disagree.
This is a Quote from my Statement:
"In addition, many Americans think of Social Security as only a retirement program. However, it is much more than that. Social Security also protects you and your family if you become severely disabled or die. But, keep in mind that Social Security was never intended to do it all. That is why I encourage you to build a complete financial package by supplementing your Social Security with private pensions, savings, other insurance, and investments".
There's much more explanations on the Statement in regards.
I remember telling my brother 3 years older, when he bragged about working construction jobs under the table (cash) and beating Federal taxes including Social Security I told him back then that he would not get much money from that program he said he had plenty of time to build or save and do better he never did. I'm getting more than 3x's what my brother is getting he barley gets $500. a month.
I may not like taxes like most people, but most don't look ahead and plan for that day when they will retire.
Now I'm 73 have been receiving Social Security for 11yrs to date I've received over $184,000. Now that's not gold mine but it's a decent supplement which added to my retirement I'm living comfortably and able too send my brother money every year helping him out.
Amen! Very few people put any money aside for their retirement, thinking that they will have time to make it up later, BUT THEY NEVER DO!
I wish people would stop with the bullshit excuse that young people today have it harder than we did in the 70's 80's and 90's. Hell, I lived paycheck to paycheck and if it weren't for Social Security, I would have little to no retirement fund. I'm freaking glad that Social Security is there for me. To those people who were able through their own fortunate circumstances to be able to work and save enough on their own to live well in retirement, good for you, but the reality is, you are in the minority.

Social Security is not an entitlement. It’s a poor excuse for a retirement investment, but as you say, we pay into it our entire working life.
It is in fact an entitlements. We paid in so we are entitled.
Yes, I vote to stop giving money to the government expecting to get it back. Just let me keep my money that I work for

Who’s to say I don’t need it. How about we just cut it for democrats.
He's welcome to forego it ... but I bet he won't.
