I love the hugely oversized flag of Mexico flying with pretentious pride in an American waterway. Pretentious pride always makes any ensuing fuck-up more enjoyable.
How fucking stupid can this captain be? That shit wasn't even close to fitting under that bridge that had been there and the same height since the 1800's
My understanding is that of course they can't get under that bridge. That was not the plan. If you notice, the ship is backwards. They intended to head out after getting of the dock. Something went wrong mechanically. It was not a complete power failure because the lights were on. There is some speculation that the engine was stuck in reverse and they could not disengage it. The current through the East River there is also pretty strong. The stern also looks like it grounded just past the bridge. I hope they have gotten the sailors off those masts. Thank goodness they were harnessed. They were dangling.
That's not a tug boat it's a pilot boat. It carries the harbor pilot out where the pilot boards the ship and guides it into and out of the harbor.
A maritime pilot, marine pilot, harbor pilot, port pilot, ship pilot, or simply pilot, is a mariner who has specific knowledge of an often dangerous or congested waterway, such as harbors or river mouths. Maritime pilots know local details such as depth, currents, and hazards. They board and temporarily join the crew to safely guide the ship's passage, so they must also have expertise in handling ships of all types and sizes.
This is why we call it the gulf of America

My bad. I didn't notice it was backwards.

This boat is being pulled by a TUG BOAT at 0:39 mark.
