Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Tsunami hits Japan - 2 weeks later all fixed, new and better
CA gets hit - 100 years later, still receiving funds for “rebuilding” and state looks like a set from the movie “Escape from LA”
Hawaii gets hit - Oprah will be out there begging, and they will STILL vote democrats
I read she finally opened her road. The locals couldn’t take it to higher ground. The road was guarded by police. The other road to higher ground went around the island, much farther than Oprah’s road. It’s really sad the native Hawaiians can’t live on their own land. But that’s progress and greed. In every little coastal community the locals are priced out. It’s like that in NC. Yeah, hopefully they have learned not to vote democrat. But, even if they don’t vote for them the elections are probably stolen. I’ve never been anywhere with such nice people. They have the southern hospitality beat.
I've always wondered about that... they're nice people with southern hospitality until they speak about poitics and their hatred for Trump comes out. It's weird, like dual personality
Luke 5:11
And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Everyone in the affected Tsunami Zones. Stay Alert and Stay Safe Frens.

Tune in again for Part 6, now in progress, to see how it's going. 🤣
New vehicles are frustrating! Everything seems to be turbo charged, which doesn't last as long. The big 3 US dealers don't make quality. If you average 30k a year (I live in a rural area), I am kept eternally poor with the constant cost of vehicles, repairs, parts, etc...
Tell me about it! Bought a used 2013 Caddy a few years back, $15,000 w/83,000 mi., thought it was a good deal. Caveat Emptor. Not only was the insurance ridiculous, but within the first month, had to have the tranny rebuilt and brakes.
It then decided it didn't want to start all the time. Of course, it always acted fine at the shop.
The airbag light is on due to a short in the seatbelt that my local shop can't fix, said I have to take it to a dealer. Cha-ching$$$$$!
It finally gave up the ghost a couple years ago and wouldn't even start with the fob. It now sits dead in my driveway with a bit over 100,000 miles, while I rent a car, more cha-ching$$. :(
Not sure what to do with it. Try to get it fixed, tow it and use it for a trade-in, sell it as is, I mean, I've already taken a bath on the thing.
One comedian, (can't remember who), said it best, "All cars have vacuum problems. Every time you turn the key, they suck money out of your wallet". 🤣
Try owning a motor home or a boat. Those are money sumps. Happiest 2 days of a boat owners life, the day they buy it and the day they sell it.
I am sorry for your pain! The choices right now are not good. Anything with turbo is a time bomb. Turbo chargers eventually break, the engine gets overstressed due to getting so much extra fuel / power required of it, and finally car manufacturers have been slowly making changes to keep up with the EPA standards. Even with the announcement of the EPA rules change, it will be years before the (climate change lobby / lawyers) are sone challenging it. Then the auto industry has to retool. It would take some real power to change it quickly.
The solution is buying Japanese
Best thing is most of them are made here in the states. Though a jdm isn't a bad thing...quality vehicles
That is the painful answer. It shouldn't be this way but Toyota cars hold their value better than anything I have seen. Now... they are also priced just enough to stay out of my reach.
Turbos need lubrication. Lots of it.
When you start the car, let it idle for a couple minutes so the oil can get a head start warming up the bearings. If it is cold give it some more time.
When you are ready to go drive leisurely for several minutes and keep the RPM as low as practicable. Give the oil time to warm up before calling for turbo action.
When you reach your destination, let the engine idle for a couple minutes. This allows the oil to absorb heat from the turbo.
Yeah, it's inconvenient, but it will make your turbo last longer. But not forever.
Thank you for your advice! IIt may help me make it to a trade in.
