I'm no theological expert, but the first mention of tithing was in Genesis, and the head priest was also the king. So he wasn't just about building a bigger church and having more wealth, he took care of the people.
Bring your tithes and offering to the store house didn't necessarily mean wealth, it mean food. So the priests, pastors, and preachers could eat, but the Lion's share was stored up for the community for times of need.
In modern times helping the needy that was done by the church has been supplanted by the government. Oh I know they give out some meals at Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but it's just a token gesture. A bigger fancier building means a larger congregation and of coarse more money for the people running the show.
In the big Churches often the pastor/preacher/priest, has a large inner circle that they focus on and the rest are unimportant, he doesn't attend their life events or talk to them on the phone now does he?
A fellow once told me that worshiping God is personal, while going to Church is fellowship, and I have come to believe that is true. Having attended many churches in my lifetime, I have never attended one for any length of time, that I didn't eventually hear them say something that I didn't think was correct.
