I'm sorry. I must retract my comment. I thought it was true, but when I looked further into it, there is no basis for it. Just a legend. He was influenced by recent events, however. Such as the Yalta Conference that divided the world into regions of influence, a strong element in "1984."

They were founded in 1884. Orwell thought that they would be successful by 1984.

They look particularly strong in the UK,other belive the same but are called different. IMAO I could be wrong.....

Orwell originally titled his book "1948", but the publishers thought that was too close for comfort and altered the title. Not Orwell's idea.
I guess,he thought,that would have been enough. This makes it even worse.
