I remember a news story from 1986 or 87 about a professional journalism conference and they would vote on various journalistic policies that journalists were expected to adhere to. There were a couple of disturbing items, but the one that stood out to me (paraphrasing a little) was that the majority (over 2/3) voted that tailoring a news story for a desired outcome was acceptable.
