None of the land ownership words really matter. Countries and borders are almost always defined by war. The US is the only one that has exceptions to that, which I know of. We bought the Louisiana purchase, the Gadston purchase and Alaska. We gave away the Philippines to the inhabitants.

As a result of war, England gave the Jews what is now called Israel. But even that doesn’t matter. The current borders have been determined by multiple wars. The Israelites either obtained the land, kept the land or lost the land due to war. When they pissed off God, the lost the land and often became slaves in another land.
