When I was younger, I once broke a guy’s wrist before he could get off a single shot. Half hour of questioning at the site, no charges against me. The other guy had half a dozen and his arm in a cast for half a dozen weeks.

Look at his right hand as he's walking up. It's cupped as though he has something in his hand. Then he puts that object in his right pocket. I don't know what was in his left pocket. But you make a good point.
It is highly likely that in a public fight, the cops will take both people to jail unless the evidence of there to show who was the defender, and who was the aggressor.
I usually do something to draw attention that I am not the aggressor like slowly back off, but then at some point, I never let anyone get close enough to hit me, without hitting them first. Protect your zone.
End the end, I have to ask you this. If someone is coming at you to do you harm, is going to jail your main concern. You know, the tried by 12 rather than carried by 6 thing.

Someone is said to have used or threatened force reasonably if a “reasonable and prudent person situated in the same circumstances and knowing what the defendant knew would have used the same force as did the defendant.”
Here is example where not subjective. For example, in Florida one does not always have to wait until someone physically attacks, to use deadly force.
I'm stopped in traffic. Five cars are stopped ahead of me. A violent protester assaults the drivers of cars ahead of me. It is therefore reasonable to think the protester will assault me when approached. I am justified in using deadly force when the protesters approach my car, even thought they have yet to directly threaten me.

I think people are past the concern for hard sentences. A hand you cant see is a threat.
