🚨 GoFundMe caught creating over a million NGO pages and accepting donations without them knowing
“GoFundMe has taken upon itself to create nonprofit pages for 1.4 million 501c3 organizations using public IRS data along with information from trusted partners like the PayPal”
“GoFundMe has created nonprofit pages for more than 1 million charities using public data.”
The corruption taking place in America is beyond comprehension, and absolutely nobody ever goes to jail
The report never mentions where the money is being sent. Are they sending the donations to the respective NGOs, or are they pocketing it? The headline makes it sound like they're pocketing it, but the report only mentions them skimming fees and foisting a 16.5% tip on the donations. Definitely shady AF and borderline theft.
I hate to sound like the old man I'm becoming, but almost everything has gone to shit in my lifetime and I don't think it's just because I'm getting old
A lot of things really were better in the 70s, 80s, even 90s. Some things did improve, but on balance, I feel like I'm disappointed multiple times a day by things that were almost exactly the same for my entire life that are now different, more crappy, poorly made or just junk.
I can't recall the last time I had mediocre customer service or technical support, much less what used to be considered good. And forget exceptional - the kind that causes you to recommend a company to everyone you know - that's not even on the menu anymore.
Edit: apologies for the rant. Been a long week and we had our first frost this morning so I'm grumpy about another winter coming.
I would imagine they are "safekeeping" the funds until they are claimed. But until then they have it parked in the market and gofundme claims all the interest for itself.
I saw a couple comments under the tweet from people who run their own charities, and they found out there were GoFundMe pages for their charities that they did not open or authorize.
This is blatant fraud. If they were a publicly-traded company they would be buried by the SEC - not only for the fraud for setting up those accounts, but for manipulating their income by creating those fake accounts and collecting fees from them.
I think people should probably stop using GFM immediately - I don't see this ending well and the donated money could be at severe risk. Besides - GiveSendGo has been the service that did not cancel conservatives. GFM has done that many times.
Exactly what I was thinking. It would explain why these NGOs know nothing about a GoFundMe page. If they had been receiving money, they would have known. So what does happen to the money? I don't know how the site works, so I would not know. Is the money held in account until it is accessed and requested for payout? Sounds a bit shady.

Weird how the most important aspects of this "story" get left out by these "professional journalists".
One of many reasons why most "experts" can go f themselves these days as far as many of us are concerned.
I absolutely agree and it's one of my major pet peeves with almost all sources of news. The news industry has gone to shit.

Just saw your comment and again I completely agree.
And no need to apologize. Rant on, fren! And I understand about winter. I grew up in Quebec City, where the winters are brutal.

I'll use your ssn to open accounts and credit cards and never tell you, just keep it warm for you.

Technically GFM is holding the money in trust.
It's a constructive trust between the donor and the trustee (GFM), to hold money for the benefit of the beneficiary.
As trustee GFM has fiduciary duty to the beneficiary.
Meanwhile making interest or using the money to stay afloat.
