Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has long championed the importance of civic education in America. So, it wasn’t totally surprising when he issued a stark warning about what happens when a people abandon their shared history and responsibilities.
The moment came on Thursday morning when Gorsuch appeared on Fox News’ Fox & Friends to debut his new children’s book, The Heroes of 1776. The literary work seeks to take kids on a journey through the harrowing stories of the Founding Fathers and lesser-known patriots during the Revolutionary War era.
While speaking to the justice, network host Lawrence Jones asked Gorsuch about the meaning of a quote from the book, which reads, “The Constitution established the first modern republic in which people rule themselves …” The Trump appointee referred back to the Declaration of Independence, which he said “contains three ‘radical’ ideas: that we’re all created equal, that we have unalienable rights that come to us from God [and] not from government, and that we the people have a right to rule ourselves — not be subjects to some dictator or a crown or king.”
Duh! This is all by design. The public school system quit teaching cursive, aka longhand, so that the last two generations can’t even read the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.
It's taught here in NC. But still, there are a lot of young people who can't even sign their own names. They just print like a 2nd grader. BTW, I learned to sign my name in longhand when I was in 1st grade. I was begging to go to school when I was three years old.
I hope we, as a nation, can rekindle the love of learning. I was just talking with my 19 yo granddaughter and she had no idea what interest was! She graduated high school this past June. I asked her two sisters, one a high school junior and the other an honors freshman, and they didn’t know, either. No one likes school and I think I know why. The real reason is that there is nothing interesting being taught. Teachers aren’t engaged. It’s all about pulling a paycheck. They rely way too much on the internet to provide lessons. There is no spark. I just hope that Trump makes good on his suggestion to bring the trades into the high schools.
There was no such thing as civics class in my high school, but we still learned how the government worked. And I learned much more in the 50+ years since high school.
How old do you have to be, to have taken Civics class in Jr. High. I’m over 65 and I loved that class. I suspect they haven’t taught it to kids in decades.
My school never had it, and this was over 50 years ago, in the late 60s and early 70s. But we did have a class called US Government that taught about federal government. I didn't learn about local and state government until I was out of school on my own.
I'm in my early 40s and didn't have Civics class. We had a required American Government class that was close. At the time, my school district was top 3 in my state. Last I heard, they don't require the class anymore.
"How can you possibly criticize me for any conflict that comes to you? I watch every day what you are doing as a society. While you sit by and watch your Constitution being torn away from you, you willfully eat poisoned food, buy manufactured products no one needs and turn an uncaring eye away from millions of people suffering and dying all around you. Is this the 'Universal Law' you subscribe to?
Perhaps I should let you all in on a little secret. No one likes you in the future. This time period is looked at as being full of lazy, self-centered,civically ignorant sheep.Perhaps you should be less concerned about me and more concerned about that." ~ White Hat time traveler John Titor, Nov 21, 2000.
My US history teacher in high school served in Burma and brought a ton of WWII stuff to show us, including guns and bayonets. He could still wear his uniform. This was in 1970, when high schools weren't "gun-free zones."
My English teach saw me reading ww2 books and brought in his 1st Marines divisional history book. Had the pictures that they took themselves... one year I had to give a demonstration speech,so I brought in a .22 rifle and showed how to clean it.
As well as the lack of legal knowledge by three current Supreme Court justices.

We need a voter IQ test more than a voter ID
I think you'll find that the two go together, more often than not.
He is correct.
Now this is the truth!

Democrats fault
"and that we the people have a right to rule ourselves — not be subjects to some dictator or a crown or king.”"
Especially in our "judges"

It was required in my High School back in the early 70's. The teacher made it fun and interesting. One of my favorite classes of all time.
