Reminds me of the story of Esther in the bible. Haman built a guillotine, hoping to hang Mordecai. All Haman's lies and devious acts caught up with him. Good read in Esther 2 and onward.
It's the nature of greed to cause a loss of sanity. I'm not surprised by them being stupid, along with being evil.
