It's not just the barracks that's the issue. There's too many bases with outdated piping in the base family housing areas, too. And they need to do away with using 3rd party contractors for base housing management. There's too many corporations getting fat off the taxpayer's money at the suffering of the families. Proper base housing management decreased when DOD decided to privatize housing management.
I'm worried about asbestos as well. I was in the USAF from '88-'98. I was at Lackland for Basic Training, Keesler for tech training, RAF Alconbury, NORAD, Ankara Turkey, and the Pentagon. EVERY base had asbestos. Turkey was really bad because I was in a Turkish Army bldg on a Turkish base for a while. NORAD did command center renovations while I was there. Alconbury was full of it. BUT - the worst was the Pentagon. My office was first in the 5th floor comm center - that was ok. When I moved to the mezzanine and later to the basement I was in the thick of it. They did a complete renovation of those 2 levels to remove all of the asbestos. There is no telling what I breathed while there for 5 years.
At the time I didn't know about any of it - except for the Pentagon. The only reason I know now is during my VA disability appointments they sent me to pulmonology. A month later the VA asked me where I was exposed to asbestos (I guess the Drs noticed something?). I researched all of my stops and couldn't believe it. I sent all of my stuff to the VA - including the Pentagon's own plan for basement/mezzanine renovations - and they are processing it. I'm not looking forward to their letter.
The Army alone has a $20 billion repair deficit as of 2025, with average buildings 47 years old. Funds get diverted to weapons procurement or operations, leaving barracks underfunded. At least $237 million in Army barracks projects stalled in 2024. Overall facilities backlog hit $137 billion in 2020, equivalent to 12 years of funding.
Navy prioritized shipyard upgrades over barracks. 5,000 sailors and 17,000 Marines in poor barracks as of 2023.

I like privatize but you need someone in charge who could tell when things are not right.
Let’s hope they get the mold, forever chemicals and DU out those barracks. And these troops need OAT bloodwork if they were exposed to mold.

They need good condition and care.
Yup. Stress lowers the immune. Then barrack toxins infect.
They need the upgrade. I agree with the spending here.
Very nice win.
Our troops deserve decent living conditions, when not at war.
I totally agree. These troops need our highest care and honor actually.
this is a very bad situation

You want them to protect you and the country, you take care of them.
$1.2 Billion, 15,000 service members equals $80,000 each. Hmm.
Reading comprehension skills, thank you! Public school upbringing or no?
15 k looks very low.
Its just the number who received new furniture and mattresses.
A lot of the old barracks will need serious structural work or replacement,
If we need to spend money, they would be the one I would agree.
The 3rd Amendment to the US constitution says we don’t have to house soldiers,
and i don’t think making us pay for their housing somewhere else is a credible workaround
You are aware that the logical conclusion to your position is no military at all, right?
No defense force and no border if you don't house soldiers.
Great, let's also separate all of the men and women again so that women will feel comfortable with joining to perform support roles.
