I'm not sure at exactly which historical era it occurred; but I've read in multiple sources that the freemason leadership was infiltrated and corrupted.
good comment, freemasonry in Scotland developed from stonemason guilds.
in England, in 1717 (QQ?) four lodges joined to form a grand lodge
in colonial America, lodges would’ve been English, but key persons did get degrees of other Rites. First 3 colonial times Knight Templars:
Captain William Davis on August 28, 1769.
Paul Revere on December 11, 1769.
General Joseph Warren on May 14, 1770
Not sure if GW ever got initiated into the Royal Arch degrees, but he sided with the Rebels over the Loyalists, & that included his allegiance and Freemasonry.
In the Temple & the Lodge,Michael Baigent, et al., they get into the Scots & Irish masons versus English, & curiously a high level English made military moves that seemed to favor “goimg easy” on the Rebel Colonist forces. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/818188.The_Temple_and_the_Lodge____
Albert Pike, a Confederate General, revised rituals of the Scottish Rite in America, a whole different system than basic Scottish lodges of. before. Pike covered up largely the Knight Templar focus and added a lot of Kabbala (Qaballa).
prior to the American Civil War, America did have a large anti-masonic movement, lead part by evangelist, Charles G Finney of “The Second Great Awakening.”
Have you seen Altiyan Childs Freemason Documentary? He won the 2010 Australia X factor and was able to escape from the machine that required him to sell his soul.
It's 5 hours long and I needed about a dozen kids soccer practices to watch the whole thing, but it covers a lot of the important stuff you mentioned above.
amazing he escaped the machine! I had not seen this, I will watch over the winter & learn more, his Aussie perspective & insights will be interesting, thanks for sharing!

Ahhh. Thank you for the helpful context!
I don't remember this drop.
The idea of a secret society is in of itself corrupt.

This is exactly what happened, some other more sinister groups stole Freemasonry symbolism as well
