Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evolving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Rules For the rest of the Site also accessible on the sidebar.

Speaking of PENGUINS, have you switched from Windows to Linux yet? Make that your new year's resolution and give the finger to the New World Order because Win11 is such an Orwellian nightmare. Today I installed Zorin OS on a coworker's laptop because he didn't want to switch to Win11 and all the crap that Microsnot is causing everyone.
It's so much easier than you think it is. Linux is not just for computer nerds anymore. It's very user-friendly, reminiscent of the XP/7 days. In fact, you can install a theme in Linux Mint to make it look just like Windows XP if you want to.
could their be a Windows 11 “winter” coming, & Linux be the safe winter haven?
AI in windows 11 instability?
I just saw a video last night which said that Linux is now at 11.4% marketshare (or thereabouts). Surpassing 11% is news to me, and the video didn't site the source. I think it had an AI voice narration, so it could just be the whole thing is AI slop. It otherwise seemed to be a well-made video.
with Dell marketing and selling computers with Linux, looking good!
Appreciate the fateful fact I was able to check GC today. I'm sitting on four outdated machines I am really overdue to put Linux on...
Haven't used it since the mid 00s, in fact I've been pretty completely out of the game for a bit over a decade, so I've had analysis paralysis... Time to move on it.
My first experience using Linux was in the mid-2000s, using Fedora. I was getting my "feet wet" so to speak, but didn't really get the hang of having to run updates on the terminal. Things have changed considerably since then. My Japanese mother-in-law is computer illiterate, but I installed Mint on her laptop because she liked Win7 and did not want to have to upgrade her laptop to Win10 and thus slow it down to a snail's pace. I had to once again remind her to run the updates when I saw her during our winter vacation, but otherwise she is in far better hands now than she was with Windows, plus she no longer has to pay for antivirus software.
Ty.
good reminder for Linux
I’ve got a PC I don’t use much, will like to switch over to Linux this year and move my saved Great Awakening research over to it away from Windows
looks like there’s ways to edit Fuji X files photos that I take of landscape, sunsets & deer, that’s all I will need
Do you know how good or bad hardware acceleration is for youtube on older laptops running Linux?
Currently using an Android x86 build on a decade older ultra book..to be honest windows 10 runs well on the secondary partition but sometimes the android side acts up
I would use the windows side for YouTube but video is choppy and less fluid on windows than it is on android.
Android... That's for smartphones, right? Android's base is Linux, but that's all I know. I have a 13 year old laptop I've installed Zorin OS onto. I can watch YouTube on it just fine.
Personally, i love my endeavour OS which is very fast and highly configurable with very little bloat.
Thanks to whoever it was here who suggested this! I really had started to get sick of my Ubuntu and this made a nice change
