You can't have "Protest Zones"... because that means by default that everywhere else ISN'T a "protest zone". That means people's 1st amendment rights are only valid while in a particular area, and nowhere else.
Colleges have tried that, and so have some cities. Doesn't work.
how about very broad ones, that do not include the streets themselves or cross walks?
Not to mention designating protest zones before conducting arrests severely handicaps the performance of those arrests.

Once a govt starts limiting rights and freedoms in the name of "safety and security," it isn't a long time later until that govt begins limiting all other freedoms and rights. Why? Because you can't limit one freedom and right without limiting the others.
Either we have a Constitution and ALL the rights and freedoms it guarantees, or we don't. Our rights and freedoms have been resti cted enough through lawfare, taxation, licensures, and all the other "technically legal" ways our various levels of govt have deemed "necessary" for whatever reasons they've deemed are "necessary" to safeguard whatever things they've deemed are "necessary" to safeguard.
That makes sense!
There is a far simpler solution. Arrest and prosecute the pay masters for treason. Stopping the money and scheduling executions for those responsible will shut it down quickly.
The 'trouble' gangs are not protesters they are Paid anarchists. Arrest the 'soros' types that are Paying for the violence and put them in prison.
