If the US left NATO it would save its only the $567 million (in 2024 numbers) that is a direct NATO contribution.

That is what I have been saying. At this point, the primary thing we need them for is the basing. When they denied us that for this conflict they opened up a can of worms. Trump will have to lock up basing and transit rights for all of NATO whenever we want.
As compensation for not supporting the US, we should get Greenland and Diego Garcia.

That trillion dollars gets spend in the US. a majority of that trillion is salaries and benefits for soldiers and all the items we buy and pay for goes to salaries in America for those. And all those materials get get purchased to build those things? Guess what salaries to those company employees too.

Also just about all the trillions we have spend in the last decade has been for our own poor choices in the middle east and nothing to do with Nato or Europe.
I'm really curious if Europe/NATO would show up if the U.S. were to make serious moves on Canada? We (Canada) really should be working together with America on some kind of North American Defence Initiative. But unfortunately, our leaders are spending all their energy trying to get their "elbows up".
