So Ship owners are stuck as they don’t want to risk their boats or crews. The payouts to any lost crew or their next of kin. Plus repairs and or the loss of the ship outright would be super expensive.

The Straight of Hormuz is that, open maritime water for legal traffic use. For 47 years, the IRGC has been effectively working to become a world super power with their concerted effort of weapon build up including nuclear weapons coupled with their strategic position to take control of the Straight itself and then control the economic power of 90+% of the nations relying on Middle East oil…. Had they succeeded, the world would be a much different place today. Their arrogance was their demise.

I am honestly surprised someone hasnt bored a more direct route through that penisula, Suez canal style to provide a more direct shipping route which goes from the Persian Gulf through to the Gulf of Oman, effectively bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

If Iran is denanding each oil tanker to pay $2M for passage, surely that would easily offset the cost of the civil works required within a reasonable payback period, when you consider there are normally 150 ships per day typically passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
