I only learned recently that the song was originally French and the French lyrics are completely different. Evidently Paul Anka was vacationing in France when he heard the song. He liked the melody so much that he bought the right to use it.
I’m a big fan of crooners and I’ve come to love French crooners along the way. I know the French version was a pop song, but it popped up on a crooner mix I listened to one day. My French is good enough to understand the sentiment and sadness of the song. But, it was a surprise to learn the song was originally French.
Great lyrics!

French version: “We’ve fallen apart slowly without noticing.”
English version: “I’ve lived my life exactly how I chose.”

Leave it to the French to try to avoid owning the consequences of their own inaction/action.
