The Chicken Tax is a 25% tariff on imports of light trucks (and originally on potato starch, dextrin, and brandy) into the United States that has been in effect since 1964. It was imposed under President Lyndon B. Johnson in response to tariffs placed by France and West Germany on importation of U.S. chicken.
This is why your precious Toy pickup is produced in the USA... just like "Alabama Trash Cans" aka Mercedes SUVs and BMW... and KIA... and Hy un die... and why VW camper vans were registered as "station wagons"... to get around that chicken tax - STILL in effect to this day, BTW!
Now euro junk like Mercedes and BMW will be 25% higher - If I'm reading this correctly. There's a reason you don't see these things on the road after 10 years...Junk! Although practically everything is junk these days...by design
What has always amazed me is the claim that BMW and Mercedes cars are so well built yet every time I go past one of their dealerships, the service bays are full and there are more waiting for repairs.
They used to be well built, and they used to be easy to work on but a bit higher in parts prices. Their main pitfall used to be their body panels didn't handle the amount of road salt necessary in some places, but again didn't used to be a struggle to fix as any body shop could do it.
Now they're not well built, they're not easy to work on, and their parts are expensive as fuck.
Agreed. They are using a lot of plastic in the cooling systems and it is disintegrating in about 10 years. Don't even get me started on Land Rover build quality.
Been thinking about picking up one from the late 80s through mid 90s.
i understand many people consider them the pinnacle of Mercedes engineering and longevity. Would really like an e-series coupe with the I-6 and a manual transmission...
I had the last year they built the squarish sedan. Hated the stick shift in rush hour traffic, but it drove like a dream. Now my main requirement is dependability.
There was a point in time where they WERE good quality, durable vehicles. Both BMW and Mercedes. Now they're over-engineered crap...they don't even have an oil dipstick on them anymore and checking the oil "real quick" isn't even possible... because there's a HUGE amount of hysteresis in the oil level system that takes time to settle to the right level. People run them out of oil all the time... and they not only leak but also burn oil after they get about 40k on them.
I'd say 1984 was probably the last decent one for both of them. The Mercedes 300 turbo diesel coupe was an AWESOME car...if you didn't get 300k out of them something is really wrong. BMW 3 and 6 series were solid as well AND affordable. They weren't super high performance or anything either - just a nice car that drove well.
Not many know that BMW didn't really sell that many cars here in the US, UNTIL they jacked their prices up to Mercedes level...they weren't considered "luxury" cars early on - they were more like a beefier, rear wheel drive Jetta & their drivetrain was really solid. Similar situation with Volvo. Boring, but really well built cars early on... and then they went down the same road as most others. They're essentially Chinese now...
I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%. It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF. Many Automobile and Truck Plants are currently under construction, with over 100 Billion Dollars being invested, A RECORD in the History of Car and Truck Manufacturing. These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon — There has never been anything like what is happening in America today! Thank you for your attention to this matter. That's all well and good, but the U.S. car makers don't use their "advantage" to sell their cars for less. They just raise their prices to match whatever a foreign car would cost. Then again, I'm not sure I could afford a decent used car right now, let alone a new car.
I'm thinking this is going to stimulate more China loving companies here to apply for tariff relief. Then sooner or later DJT will jack them up for it.
I love this man and so does my wife ,she calls him Daddy way before the Sec of NATO did and i'm totally cool with that,WHO'S YOUR DADDY.
Hmm... maybe this ALSO includes passenger vehicles. Something that was only for commercial imported vehicles since 1964:

Arsehola Fond Ov Lying is becoming increasingly rabid of late. Coincidence much?

But that will raise the prices of goods imported from- .... oh wait
