My daughter works in a PT office - she claims people have a lot of success avoiding surgery with two exercises that can be done at home. One is to sit next to a wall and put your bad shoulder arm straight out to the wall and "spider walk" with your fingers up as high as you can and back down - repeat as many times as you can several times a day. You will find your reach gets longer and longer without pain. The second is a shoulder pulley that can be used on a closed door - it can be used sitting or standing and exercising your shoulder up, down and out as many times as you can. She said it sometimes takes a month or more depending on the person. There are also essential oils used as aromathrapy such as peppermint that some people use for frozen joints along with the stretching. Worth a try?
Yes. Exactly this. I slipped and fell on ice a few years ago and as a 60 year old man, doing the cartoon slip and fall and throwing your arms over your head must have done BOTH shoulders really good. It was to the point I could not put a belt around my waist. Could not reach behind my own body at all. It took about 2 years of ibuprofen and just stretching to finally get my arms up to the middle of my back from my waist.
Your body does heal but it leaves behind scar tissue. If you do not break up the scar tissue, it is just there and stays forever and causes extreme pain whenever it is encountered. Physical therapy is designed to break apart that scar tissue and reveal the healed tissue beneath. This is why everyone hates to do it but if you persist, it works. 100%, all the time. I would have never believed it myself unless I had actually done it. No help, just stretching and flexing against the pain a little every day all the time. Now there is like 98% range of motion compared to when I was in my 20's.
You've heard it all before, "Just do it." "No pain, no gain." They're not really lying.
My experience: have done both shoulders there is not much bar cortisone and light Physio but the main reason for my reply is that I have learned that once treated it will never reoccur, itβs one of this conditions that is a once life time injury.
Good luck with the treatment.
I was wondering if anyone has had any success in an alternative to rotator cuff/shoulder surgery and what that alternative is?
What does imaging show?
Is the ball/socket worn out? Just one or both?
Key point: This is a mechanical wear issue - most likely brought on by a low fat diet. Butter is the best joint grease. It could also be brought on by injury or bone loss.
It's impractical and unlikely that you will be able to fix this even with a radical regimen of nutrition - BUT what do the X-rays/MRI images show?
Cortisone... feels great the first time, but it heals/repairs nothing. Subsequent injections have diminished results.
I don't want to come off all doom & gloom, but you have to honestly look at it from a mechanical perspective. Just like ball joints on your car... there's no practical way to fix them, aside from replacing.
There ARE some therapeutic things for pain management, if that's your only focus. DMSO, as mentioned is one option that many with shoulder joint pain get relief from.
Double this sentiment! Dr Shawn Baker found patients on a ketogenic/high fat diet would lose weight and the pain would go away. I was told I needed hip surgery stat. I went full carnivore and back to jogging- no surgery?
It depends on what the actual injury is. I went through a year of physical therapy after a shoulder injury before agreeing to have an MRI with contrast done. The MRI showed that my only option all along was surgery due to several ruptured muscles and torn tendons. No amount of PT would ever repair it. I chose an athlete's orthopedist because I need to be able to lift 50-lb. bags and work with my hands above my head in my orchard, and I'm glad I did. I'm now four days post surgery and healing nicely. I just wish I hadn't waited so long to find out what was really wrong!
I took a fall about 3 yrs ago and ruptured my cuff. It was very painful and I am too "high risk" for surgery so I did some research of my own and this worked for me. It eases the pain in my case but my hand strength isn't what it used to be. Changes in weather still affects it but I'm 66 yrs old. It's not a cure but it helps me get by. Do your own research. Check with a chiropractor for exercises that may help. You can find all the ingredients online. Hope this helps fellow Texan.
100ml DMSO 99.9%
80ml Distilled Water
10ml Frankincense & Myrrh Arthritis Pain Relief drops
20ml Siva Lavender Oil
13ml Vitamin E oil
7ml Jamaican Black 100% pure Castor oil
Make sure area to be treated is very clean and free of any debris or chemicals. Massage area with a small amount of mix in palms of hand and let it soak into skin. A heating pad or warm, moist compress works well to relieve pain.
I had the right shoulder done about 20 years ago and it started acting up a few months ago.
The left shoulder is really bad but I am 81 and do not want to go through that replacement again.
The surgeon I saw gave me the following news, which I was sad to hear.
The discs that they put in for the replacement do not last forever and the one in my right shoulder has worn down, which is what is causing the pain.
The Doctor said they could go in and replace just the worn part and I said no. I will live with it the best I can for now. I refuse to have any surgery done because I no longer trust the hospitals. It would take a life or death situation for me to go and I would be worried forever after that they gave me that damn jab.
BUT, the left shoulder is bad and he suggested a replacement. I asked him if he could do the cortisone shots for now. He agreed but when I asked him if he could do the right shoulder, he said NO! It is dangerous to inject cortisone into a replaced shoulder as it appears to cause infections.
So I use DMSO on both shoulders although I get the cortisone shots about every two months in the left one.
They don't make the pain go away, but they do subdue it enough for me to get work done.
I know. I did a ton of research on it, and the Doctor told me of the side effects, but in all honesty - at 81, the shoulder is degraded now to the point that I know a replacement SHOULD be done. I just do not want to go thru the surgery and rehab.
I did enough of it for the other shoulder, the hip, the neck, and I am just a skeletal that has deteriorated after too much time working outside for hours and doing things that is frowned on by other women. Shoveling, oil changes, installing appliances, Installing overhead lights, etc. And I am a OCD person so everything I ever did HAD to be perfect-at least as perfect as I could make it.π
My husband and I are very healthy for our age. He still works part time at Home Depot after years with the Pipe Fitter's Union. And I still do as much as I can taking care of a home that is 3600 square feet. My oldest son told me I am in so much pain because I am always cleaning. π€£ But it does keep me going.
So the x-rays show my shoulder is bone on bone and the shots do work for a short time. So I take that short time to do what I can and then pray to GOD for miracle shoulders. π
When the time comes I will simply quit and hope that I was able to finish what needed to be done, as an OCD person. Until then, I will put my pain in the hands of the Holy Spirit.
How about DMSO?

Here is a good place to start.

That surgery dammit HURTS! PT required hydrocodone for 4 weeks! The other one will just have to be what it is. Never again.

This guy is very good. He helped me last year (just following exercise from the videos. I know he's helped many others as well.

Warning: cortisone may or may not work for a time, but it always degrades the tissue. IMHO it is not worth it. YMMV,
