I’ve been to this exhibit many times and I don’t remember this story being told, but I was a child. It is a remarkable exhibit. They also used to have a coal mine ride that they got rid of, sadly. These are great memories from my youth visiting the once great city of Chicago as a suburban girl.
True history is rare, and only one other person in this thread seems to be aware of the truth about this particular part of history. Americans did not capture the first Enigma machine.
The Royal Navy retrieved the first Enigma machine in 1941, the first capture of a 4 rotor machine. It was not anything to do with the USN at all, the USA wasn't even at war then. More Hollywood lies about WW2, there are a lot of them.

U-505 really was cursed. Her crew were right. She ended up permanently in Chicago of all places. At least humans have the option of leaving.
Would love to see her but hate to go to Chicago...

That's a good day for American Navy.
Absolutely! 🫡
Nick, a former 68W (combat medic) gives the best detailed story telling of the whole event ever in his video Grand Theft U-Boat
Lies. See my other post on this thread.
Anything that ends up on Chicago's side had to have some pretty bad karma coming to it.
I toured it many years ago.
Worth the visit if you are in Chicago.
Would love to see it..
It's the only thing I remember from that museum visit.
I'll bet it left an enormous impression...

Ah, well then, I see your point. Thanks for the clarification.
When I was a kid, I visited that submarine many times at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. I had no idea they snatched an enigma machine.
