I went into DC for a couple hours on the 4th in the later afternoon. I was a little surprised by the number of NG deployed. Pretty much at all the intersections of roads closed off, at least the roads I walked.
They were helping direct people and a few were in a box truck handing out water bottles.
Yeah, if I'd better planned I would have nabbed a hotel room months ago.
In that heat with people standing in line that long I'm surprised there wasn't a riot!
Although it certainly would have been short lived with the massive NG and PD presence.
I kinda wish I had stayed, but after walking around for 2 hours being hot and tired I didn't want to sit down there for another 4 hours until the fireworks. Plus I found all the street closings annoying, I wanted to get over to the Mall.
No. Q and all the “White Hat” Patriots who recognized the evil & the peril to our Republic, actually beat us all to it, with The Plan. Yet they needed us too! I am so grateful that I was smart enough & stubborn enough to pay attention when I needed to be.
President Trump significantly expanded the National Guard presence in Washington, D.C. as part of a targeted federal "summer surge" that brought the total number of troops in the nation's capital to nearly 5,000. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The administration and defense officials have cited several specific reasons for this massive surge:
• America 250 Celebrations: The most immediate driver of the troop surge is to bolster security and assist with logistics and crowd management during massive, highly-trafficked events for the country's 250th birthday.
• "DC Safe and Beautiful" Mission: The expansion builds upon a broader initiative launched by President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth aimed at cracking down on opportunistic crime, illegal firearms, and disorderly gatherings in key tourist areas and transit hubs.
• Federal-Local Friction: The use of outside Guard troops reflects long-running tensions with local city leadership. Because Washington lacks full statehood, the Trump administration has the legal authority to deploy troops on federal land, which local D.C. officials and civil rights groups have criticized as a federal overreach or "military occupation". [8, 9, 10, 11, 12]
Coverage of the deployment and its ongoing impact on the city can be followed on NBC Washington and WUSA9 . [2, 13]
Question - are we sure it was Trump that doubled the Guard? He is their Commander-in-Chief and can certainly do so, but Presidents usually delegate things like that (in DC - not the regular states) to the SECDEF/SECWAR. They issue the orders to the commanding General of the DC Guard.
So it could've been POTUS Trump or SECWAR Hegseth.
For that matter - that General or even the DC Mayor could've asked Pete or POTUS to double it.
We all know how fake news likes to drive a narrative, and in this case it looks like they want the people to see Trump as further militarizing DC, as opposed to trying to create a safe environment. Until I see Trump saying he did it himself, I'll remain skeptical on who actually asked for it, or issued the order.
The order wouldn't be wrong in any way (and I like the order) - whether POTUS or Pete issued it - or if DC requested it - but because the news is focused on Trump doing it I'll believe it was yet another attempt to push Trump as a dictator.

I was there all day and all night. I was there even when there was almost a riot at the gates 😂😂

The Storm.
Beat me to it Tink! Agreed. JAG already deployed there and Schiff on deck.

Maybe preparing for the August 22-23 race. But it is a little early.
Must be a lot of cleanup in the reflection pond?
