Interesting perspective. Whenever I need help understanding something, I try to think of my grandparents' generation and how they had to function. It helps identify what has naturally and artificially (via evildoers) changed.
No husband 70-80+ years ago certainly meant the woman would be somewhat of an outcast / spinster as the goal back then was to stay home and raise a family while the father worked.
