I agree that these basic methods work on a lot of people, but I don't think they explain how so many of the very intelligent, self-sufficient and independent thinking types are also swept up in this. I think there's a good chance there's something more going on.
Aside from psychotronic-type tech, in terms of Marshall McLuhan's studies on direct 'media effects':
Within 30 seconds of watching a TV screen (where lighted images are projected into your eyes from behind the screen) vs. a movie screen (where the projector aims at the screen not at your eyes) ...... a person habituated to TV will be in alpha brain rhythm. That is equivalent to a light trance, and renders them highly suggestible to subliminal and meta messaging.
Also the excessive graphics (now almost universally present on news programs) deliberately utilize 'Erickson's Confusion Technique' to put people into a trance:
All the various moving, conflicting words, sights and sounds crawling across the screen are meant to overload the conscious mind's processing capabilities and disarm critical thinking - again leaving normal TV watchers open and vulnerable to suggestion.
That’s why when when my parents watch tv and I happen to be in the room, my mind out of the blue will happen to get sucked in to whatever is being projected on the tv screen. It also happens when we go on our phones too
Because people don't question their source of information.
People just drink the koolaid without asking why it was made from them. In this information age over the last 10 years specifically - the well where we obtain our information has been standardized, acquired, controlled, and then fluoridated. Everyone's drinking from it without question.
We went from don't believe the internet to everyone slurping up everything on it in a decade. How and why?
Many factors involved in that.
Capitalized individuals who wanted to leverage their money in exchange for power have figured out how to just that by forming an information cartel
If we still had telegrams, this is the equivalent of the people that own the lines being able to take all messages and append and edit them before they are carried to the recipient. This is not questioned today. Why?
Who is doing things to curate and control the information we receive. Why would they do this?
What is the goal?
Would you buy a megaphone that made your voice louder but modified it to sound like an elementary age child?
Would you buy headphones that let you listen to music for free but play an ad every song?
Would you buy a TV that was crystal clear and big and cheap but it could change what you are watching at anytime?
You're not an independent thinker if you get swept up in propaganda. Do you mean college students? Or just normal adults? It's been a long time since I've seen anyone with any of those attributes on the enemy's side.
There isn't much going on to be honest. It's an age old trick, nothing new. Sure we have newer technology which allows an easier process, but it also gives people the freedom to seek out alternative information.
Regardless, your social life is much better if you tow the same line as the herd, rather than when you don't. Not to mention financial backlash if the woke mob takes offense to you. Some people likely see things are out of whack, but are afraid to speak out against it. It's easier and less stressful to just shut up and go along.
A large part of it is understanding how the brain works. No matter how logical a person may be the primal emotional brain will override if not trained properly. A purely logical individual is also susceptible to influence as well. The true brainwashing isn't something new. It's the nature of humanity and constant conflict of self awareness.
For some species the means of survival is self sacrifice for the species (the left). For others its for each to be strong as possible to survive (the right). The challenge in humanity is both exists among us. Where politics come into play is trying to find ways to manipulate those for personal power.

And on many levels.

'Programming'.

You wouldn't, but you already have.

Good point! Perhaps those normies are simply "receptive" and there exist sub-routines in the programming which addresses that.
