Agree with most of what you said. Can't say much about Torba as I, like you, have an account and just lurks around there from time to time.
You mentioned Gab as one of the free speech platforms, Minds being the 2nd on the list. I would like to also recommend 4chan/8kun. I know it has the bad stuff but you still can find the good stuff there. They don't even really ban a lot of stuff, just CP as far as I can think of. I don't frequent 4chan often but when big events happen like the elections, Israel-Palestine, Las Vegas (and any other shooting events), I go there because they usually find stuff that isn't available elsewhere.
You mentioned that Google took Parler down. Was that actually Amazon? Parler was using Amazon's AWS service so Amazon took them off completely? Or am I mistaken?
Yeah don't trust Parler at all. It got to be a honeypot at this point now and being run by the glowies, waiting to trap idiots for spilling shit they shouldn't be.
You are correct. It was Amazon that took down Parler. Those Bit Tech dip-shits all blend together at this point.
As far as 4chan/8chan go no offense but I'm OLD SCHOOL. I was on IRC before the term internet was even invented by Al Gore(rolls eyes). 1989 UUCP via SCO Xenix on a 14.4 bps modem. Back then it was PeachNet here in GA. So when I say I've been on some weird platforms I've seen it all... BBS, MUDS, IRC, etc...
4chan and 8chan are just a confusing mess. You can't tell who's even talking to who. I'm sure there is some trick to it no one bothered to tell me and I didn't go looking even though as a unix admin there is literally no obstacle I couldn't overcome if I wanted to. If I can't use it casually with my skills no normie will ever use it... thus its useless. Well except for the autists who do use it, but calling it a free speech platform is misnaming it. More like a free speech back room that only special people can get in to.
Gab started out a little wonkey on their interface but they improved greatly, and have proven they listen to their users. They are improving the video side of things too. Pretty soon they will be able to replace FB, Twitter, and YT... and they are free speech oriented... why do we need those other sites again?
I'm old school as well. I'm in IT, however I'm unemployed (still haven't started on my first career job) and hell yeah, I was on IRC a lot. BBS too. Didn't get around to do MUDS as I didn't know it existed until I got into college. AOL was awesome back then until it went into the shitter.
My first computer was an Amiga lol. I'm currently running Fedora 33 on my computer and have been using Linux for about 10 years now. Got tired and bored of using Windows and I wanted to push myself further.
Yeah 4chan was confusing at first until I installed the "4chan X" extension. It helps you track the comments and such. Give it another try with the 4chan X extension, and it may be a better experience for you but I do agree, it's confusing for any normie to follow.
Also yeah I agree they do have their weird standards that everyone have to follow and if you don't, you get shamed as a "newfag" or a "summerfag". I don't really participate and like I said, I'm just there to find any new info not found anywhere else.
Gab is off to a slow start and surely they will get to where FakeBook/Twatter are at now. I do wish Torba well and lots of luck because I'm sure he's under constant attacks from the DS.
Heh. Yeah, I got into Slackware and FreeBSD in the mid 90s. I was a channel warrior on EFnet for quite some time. I never did the AOL thing. I guess that's because by the time AOL was big I was all in on EFnet.
See that newfag thing was something I ran into. The people on 4/8chan are incredibly unfriendly. They can babble all they like about you have to be tougher etc but with the way they treat people plus how confusing it is I'm shocked it has as many people as it does. I agree they dig up a lot of good info, but they don't seem to understand that how they behave slows down the spread of that info. Sort of defeats the point if you asked me.
For me, I started out with AOL then eventually I found out about IRC (forgot how I found out but somehow I transited from AOL to IRC) and used it since. Had AOL because it was "pre-Fakebook" and my IRL friends were on it and not on IRC. lol
I'm sure you've done way more than I have as I was still "wet-behind-the-ear" with IRC, despite learning my way around it with IRC commands and all. I almost never know which channel to go in so I just find one of the randos from the list then enter. Boring? leave. Weird? leave. I almost never find a channel I can stay for a long time. I was also trying out different servers like DalNet, EFnet, Freenode, ircnet (I think this one is the default one cuz I used mIRC and it was almost always trying to connect me to ircnet?) and some more I forgot... wow. Brings back memories and maybe I'll give it another try.
For me, the Internet back then was glorious and I was learning a shit ton of stuff until they bottled it down in the mid 2000's and on.
Darwyn, I think might know you from Eris lol. This obviously isn't my nickname there, or elsewhere. But if yours is close to what it is here, we've met.
Regardless you guys are making me happy talking about all this stupid shit afterive had an absolute ball breaking day.

Thanks all of you k-rad dewds.
Google and apple removed Parler from their respective app stores, and then Amazon banned them from using their servers.
Ah the app... yes that too.
4chan is nothing like it was. Idk how I feel about it anymore after they started logging and added captchas
Yeah oldfags were bitching about that as well, saying 4chan is now compromised and a honeypot.
