Maybe because it's one of the largest, if not THE largest, made-in-China projects that may be doomed to failure in the very near future. Built with sub-standard materials (concrete, rebar, and its footing) it has deformed over the years from a straight line to a raged shape. Fissures have been recorded and the entire structure seems ready to fail.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!! The dam holds back several billion tons of water that, if suddenly released due to dam failure, would kill millions of Chinese downstream of the dam, including much farmland and infrastructure, villages and cities.
As to why people are obsessed with it, it's probably like watching a car race where people expect to see wrecks... or watching a tightrope walker high above the ground defying gravity. People have a morbid curiosity about such things. So the world watches as the rainy monsoon season approaches, which will stress the dam even more than usual.
It would be probably the greatest human tragedy in history, and China (especially the CCP) might never recover in our lifetime.
When the roads and landscape and even buildings are deformed along with the dam maybe he has a point. There is a 3000 x 3000 pic on Duckduckgo. Go have another look at the building on the lower left and explain to me why it is warped?
Thank you for making my point. I have read a lot about this and part of the story has to do with the underlying geology where the base of the dam sits...it's fairly unstable ground..., and the anchoring at either end is also unstable geologically. Add to that the shoddy building materials, shoddy work, and cutting corners at every opportunity due to graft and corruption, this is what you get.... a ticking time bomb that threatens the lives of millions of people.
By jove you are right, I particularly like the way the shifting terrain has changed the shape of the roof of the building in question. That is a neat trick! Have you never seen distortions in google satellite or maps? Occam's razor.
And two other factors....that area of the Yangtze is prone to earthquakes AND the monsoon rains have been greater than usual in the past few years, so....
Or maybe they put fake photos on there... Are you in a position where you can take a picture of the damn for us to prove your claims? If not then please refrain from providing your expertise on the matter.
Satellite views of the dam shows that portions of it has moved from its original position. The weight of the water is causing the dam to shift. It was thought the damn would fail with all the heavy rains and everyone below the dam would be swept away. Also much of China's food production comes from the land area below the dam. Many cities would be flooded and their ability to feed their people would be lost. The Wuhan lab also sits below the dam. It was theorized that the Chinese government may allow the dam to fail and wash away any evidence that China unleashed a bioweapon on the world. Killing millions of their own people and gaining sympathy from the planet is a better alternative than being found guilty of attempted global genocide.
the portions of the dam are moving due to inferior construction. During the construction portions of the dam were built and not anchored to the bedrock it was set on top. The Chinese engineers brought in western engineers who told them they were out to lunch with their construction. They took great offense called them racist and threw them out. They said at that time about 1/3 of it was completed and were not going to re do it. that is what you see movement in. The dam will fail its a matter of when. another poster said it is suspected to be wired to blow it. Weather that is true we dont know. Surely this is a prime military target in any event. What better way to save their ass from evidence of a released BIO WEAPON to be washed out to sea...Become a victim of a disaster instead of a perpetrator of a declaration of war on the whole world...makes you wonder...
It's the world's largest dam. It's a bug status symbol for them, and they put it up extremely quickly. Doing so devastated eco systems, destroyed thousands if years of history and displaced thousands.
If it's in fact on the verge of failing its not just a symbol of Chinese power waning, but it'll be a huge humanitarian disaster. China would be devastated in almost every way you can think of.
Maybe a bit like if Hoover Dam failed here, it's a high profile public work, that would be embarrassing, but fewer people would be killed with Hoover than with Three Gorges. Also the economic impact would be much smaller. Frankly, since Hoover is getting close to 100 years old, it wouldn't be as much of a loss of face.
The Three Gorges Dam is so big that when they filled it it actually changed the Earth's rotation. Our day is x number of microseconds longer(or shorter, I forget) than it was before the dam was filled.
It's several things. First of all, as everyone else has pointed out, the original construction was done as fast as possible, so now they're reaping the "benefits" of their shady construction methods. Now as a result they have a ticking time bomb ready to wipe out Lord knows how many people. I remember reading somewhere, that's it's something like 90% of the chinese population under 50 lives immediately in the area that would be destroyed when the dam breaks. So there goes the entire Chinese military conscription force in case of a hot war.
Beyond the status symbol it gives them and ecological/genocidal devastation its going to cause when it finally breaks, most people have come to the conclusion they're siphoning off a large portion of the energy it makes to mine bitcoin and other crypto currencies. So if that mining goes offline, then the crypto market is going to go haywire as well.
Rumour has it that the dam is mined, set to blow if the Chinese don't behave. Dam is solid, built by Western engineers. If it bursts, probably engineered.

that summed it up pretty well...not to mention that if the dam goes so does the Wuhan lab (you know where all the evidence for cv19 is)
Any source or is that just what you "think"?
It's 100% believable as China isn't know for high quality anything.
So now you trust Google? Interesting.
That neither proves nor disproves anything.
Ok if you say so. ?

Everything on google is real, not:- https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Ca34OaJXEAAPPeX.jpg
Edit:- I would not stand down river from that dodgy piece of chinese crap either, I just don't like that satellite photo at all. It stinks.

Perfect storm.

Just Googled it and find that warping and deformation is still a concern.
They dont have to shoddy socilist work dooms it to glorious failure.

Anything you buy from chyna is garbage and designed to fall apart so you buy something to replace it. Why would the dam be different.
What goes first...
Three Gorges Dam
or
Jerry Nadler's pants button
I think there is equal pressure.

Part of me just wants to see the chaos because fuck China. Its probably not the healthiest part.
Naw.its the healthiest part.china is a cancer on the globe.
Watch the Water...
