Beware!! Scammers are calling through USAA's Customer Service number 1-800-531-8722!!
These scammers are reporting that they need to verify fraudulent activity on your account. Once you give your PIN and information to verify charges, they are wiping account clean!!
These scammers know the script and sound very professional.
Beware!! Check your account, and DO NOT give your info to anyone that is calling to verify charges on your account. Look at your account and tell them that you will call yourself.
I know there are people who fall for these things, otherwise they wouldn't continue to proliferate. But anyone who gets through my spam filters (which is quite difficult, because my main filter is ME... if I don't recognize the name/number or some stupid "RESTRICTED" thing shows on my phone, they never get answered in the first place). But IF they got through and started asking for PIN numbers etc., I would tell them firmly, "GO FUCK YOURSELF!" and hang up...and block the number.
This isn't hard, people.
I finally found this pretty good app that I can use to block wildcard numbers. For example numbers beginning with area code 202. I use to get multiple robo calls a day to donate to republican party. Pretty much stopped that in it's tracks. Blocks Text messages too. It's call TrueCaller.
haha! Sorry for the poor spelling earlier...My poor son who is in his early 20's had this happen. Ugh! Poor guy! His account was wiped clean. The fraud department said it was not their number but identified the fraudster. He should be getting his money back. I have never heard of such a scam. I would have never given my crap over the phone. It's weird that he did that because he's pretty anal and it's not like him.
I think I am pretty smart about dealing with potential scams, but you have to stay on your toes for sure.
Nobody should ever be asking for a PIN. The point of a PIN is that nobody should ever be asking for it, including the people who made you get it. If someone needs your PIN, it’s because they want whatever you PIN is protecting.
I've never heard of a spoof phone call. I guess I've been fortunate. I haven't had to deal with many "shady people." lol!! Oh, and I am tech "stupid."
If I have had a spoof call, I probably didn't even know. My spidey senses are very good and I tend to know when something or someone is shady pretty fast. I hang up on a lot of people. haha!
I pray this crap never happens to me. My poor son is a broke college student and doesn't need this crap.
That's why I have a cell phone number with an area code different from the area code I live it. I now that any call that comes from that area code is spam, and I block it immediately.
Found this app named TrueCaller that allow me to block wildcard numbers like any number that starts with a certain area code, for example 202. Also blocks text messages.
As a rule don’t give people who call you personal information. If you need to deal with a credit card or bank issue, always be the one to make the call using an official number either on your card or from an account statement/bill.
I'd say not giving caller you personal information is not a general rule, it a hard fast rule. But I know what you mean.
Maybe the FBI will do something to stop these scams. Bahahaha.
they are probably the ones behind it
Love it. You've got the FBI figured out.
I have USAA. they don't call.
Of your bank calls with a problem, hang up and call the number on the back.of your card. Sake what the problem is MD they'll confirm.if there is one. It's easy for a scammer to spoof a number.
How to handle phone scams: never give personal info over the phone. Done.
Yes, I received a text message from Chase today. About nonexistent fraud. Be careful.
Who the heck would ever give a caller the bank account PIN. I guess there are those kind of people out there.
Everyone should especially warn the elderly parents/relatives who I suspect are most likely targets.
How in the world do they use the real number?🤔
In the case of email, the from address in the email can actually look like it's from a legit company, but if you go into the email properties and look at the sender address, it will show some oddball address.
Exactly. That's what threw him off.
He had their number programed in his phone, so when it rang it said USAA. That's why he automatically thought it was them. I guess now they can be on a different number and use USAA or any other number. Freakin' weird!
Its easy to mask your number as virtually any number.
Telecom, banks, isps are some of the most corrupt shitters ever.
TrueCaller app is a good one that allow wildcard number blocking. For example you can block calls and text from a number that starts with a certain area code, or area code and prefix.
About half the spam calls I get have the same area code and three-digit prefix as my number. I'm going to look at that app, thanks.
