It sounds like we as a community need to do hard research on available VPNs. I have the one I use, but who knows if it's susceptible to Chinese influence like ExpressVPN and others? I'm suspect of the ones that do big advertising, like NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
We also need to keep in mind that those "top ten VPN" lists out there on blogs are mostly ranked by the affiliate marketing percentages, not by actual features, etc.
Lastly, how can we be sure who owns the company? Do you all remember that the CIA had set up a company in a European nation for the sole purpose of spying on European officials, and it worked?
I did a bit if research a while back and chose NordVPN over expressVPN due to NordVPN not being a part of any of the 5 eyes or 14 eyes countries. There were other reasons, but I forget, lots of info between then and now cluttering up my brain. I use Nord and recommend it.
They sent out an email espousing support for Hong Kong during the protests - I signed up for the paid email service that day after using the free service for years & I let them know why.
On 14 January 2016, ExpressVPN was criticized by former Google information security engineer Marc Bevand for using weak encryption.[21] Bevand had discovered that only a 1024-bit RSA key was used to encrypt the service's connections after using it to test the strength of the Great Firewall of China.[21] Bevand described ExpressVPN as "one of the top three commercial VPN providers in China" and asserted that the Chinese government would be able to factor the RSA keys to potentially spy on users.
I just uninstalled it. Damn it Rush why did you promote this crap without doing your do diligence???

I was about to say this is old news. It's exactly why I never considered using EVPN no matter which talking head pushed it.
Imho, one had to be compromised or inept to be covering politics for as long as he did without exposing what we know...
Protonmail will gibs you a VPN free or sell you a better thing.

They supported the Hong Kong protesters via an email blast to their users - indicates to me they are legit.
Or they catfish.

Yup that was an early bomb shell. I'm guessing they're losing a lot of accounts.
Everyone wants to be McAfee
Thanks Bongino.
I don't trust ANY VPN. I use mine sparingly.
OVPN
They own their own hardware.
