I've never in my life ever heard anyone pronounce it that way. I've lived in the South my whole life so far. Even Tony Joe White says poke salad in "Poke Salad Annie."
The term “poke salad” is actually a misnomer. Even though that’s what a lot of people call the most common pokeweed dish, its true name is poke sallet or poke salat. That’s because poke has been eaten for so long by our European ancestors here in North America. The word sallet comes from an older form of English, and refers to something like a cooked salad. So, now you know: “poke salad” is actually poke sallet.
Why are you insisting that a hillbilly mispronunciation of a word is somehow the correct word?
The real Old English words that we still use are spelled differently now. Just as an FYI, our word "salad" comes from the French word "salade," not from Anglo-Saxon. You have to go all the way back to Latin to find a "t" in a proper spelling of the word ("salate").
Live in ignorance if you wish. I just hate to see made up things presented as fact. That's all.
Everything about the plant is poison, except for young leaves, which you can cook like turnip greens. They probably taste just as nasty too. I'd rather have collards or cabbage.
The scientific name of pokeweed is Phytolacca americana. My biology teacher taught us this by saying in a fake Italian accent, "If you poke me, I'm-a gonna fight-a like-a Americana." That was way back in the good old non-PC days. :)
I think you can make medicine from the roots.
I have some nice healthy plants in my back yard right now.
There's a y#@tube vid about pokeweed. A chemist who wrote her thesis on it. It hasn't really been studied because it has so many different unknown ingredients?,elements?,chemicals? that they don't even know where to start. They are still finding new cannabinoids in weed and that's been studied a lot more. I'd like to know myself.
Did some research back when I was removing it from my new backyard. The highlight was that the Declaration of Independence is said to have been written in ink derived from pokeweed. Anyone know about this?
I have had great outcomes with smokeweed.
...it's supposedly toxic except as a very young plant.. is it like ''poke salad'' that is beneficial or do you need to chemically isolate components?
I was going to ask this as well. And fyi, it's poke sallet, not salad. Lol. I thought it was salad for years too.

"Sallet" is a helmet, and "salat" is a muslim ritual.
We use modern English.

I am left no recourse other than to show you all of the Old English words we STILL use to this day.
Why are you fighting gobby/myself over such a small matter? What does it gain you?
