I remember playing it as a kid and there was always some asshole who would show up after you started a game and would tell you where to go. The worse was a jerk who stuck his hand over mine and took my game over for me. Fine, he memorized more of the rooms, but it still pissed me off.
But yeah it was basically memorization.
