Pretty fun exchange at Safeway after shopping tonight! I walk out with a full cart and a guy walking toward the store is looking at me kinda funny, like I’m confusing him. He walks up and awkwardly says, "are we allowed to not wear masks in there now?" I go, "we never had to. It's been up to you this whole time. I don't wear one while I'm shopping and haven't for months now. I saw a few others without a mask to. Totally up to you I guess." He says, "awesome, thanks!" I watched him walk in and tuck his mask into his back pocket. As an aside, I saw more people while shopping without a mask today than I have this entire time. Still more masked than non but more non by a long shot! Anyhow, it was neat seeing someone take a red pill and immediately get excited and I wanted to share.

I’ve been trying since April of 2020, but like always, I was mostly alone. That is why I sometimes doubt the reach and success of this movement. Mouth breathers are legion.
It definitely feels weird not being the ONLY freeface in every single store I go into. I got so used to being the lone unmasked avenger LOL, now it's strange to be able to smile at people and have them smile back.
I love telling people "You know, you don't have to wear that thing if you don't want to" and seeing their eyes light up. Then I reveal that I never bought a mask, just to get the incredulous stare.
I’m in Florida bro, so if they still have a mask on, they want to. And usually they are fat.
Yup, Florida. Incredible how many muzzle-zealots we have.
I haven't worn a mask in stores or restaurants for over 6 months.
I get depressed walking thru grocery stores these days. There are increasingly EMPTY shelves or low stock of normal goods.
Not that I like them, but I noticed a few weeks ago that (in Houston) frozen burritos were gone from supermarkets. They were just gone. Sometimes half the frozen French fries shelves are empty. Fresh veggie selection isn't what it was. Yesterday, I was looking for sweet potatoes, but there were only 4 small ones left unless I wanted organic ones.
There seems to be less and less selection each time. Before long, our stores will look like the old Soviet stores.
I went to Walgreens and they had replaced the clear glass doors of the refrigerators with screens that showed what 'should be' in the cooler. When you open the door the shelves inside were bare.
A perfect metaphor for our current system.
Technically the coolers were not empty since they were 'full' of pictures of food. Yum
Like a fake north Korean shop
Safeway. So Left Coast, I’m guessing. 🧐
Yep. Safeway is around DC/Baltimore too. They operate under like 10 banners. Just some pointless info you’ll never need 😂
Oh, I unashamedly love pointless info. Thank you!
Here’s another fun fact of retail brands seemingly stuck out on islands all by themselves:
https://thesledgehammer.wordpress.com/2009/02/18/a-not-so-standard-chevron-station/
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/standard-oil-gas-station
That’s wild! I can’t wait to find a way to naturally squeeze this new chevron/standard info into conversation!
See if you can find the one in your state (if you live in Chevron territory).
I just happen to have filled up my cars at both these stations listed (CA and WA)… before I ever knew about this story.
LOL I found the one in my state like 2 paragraphs into the second article. Haha it’s maybe 15 miles from me. I may have to go get gas there just for the novelty.
The 2nd article is flat-out wrong about stations named Standard having disappeared by the 1950s under new branding.
Where I grew up, in St. Louis, in the '60s and '70s there were Standard stations all over town. The station nearest our home where we always filled up was a Standard.
Lovely story! Thanks for sharing
Where I live it's a polar opposite situation. I went to the local grocery store and I would estimate 90% of these idiots were wearing a mask. The door says please wear a mask and of course I say please go fuck off to that but these sheep willfully comply with out question. If you put a sign on the door that says "due to covid-19 we request that you not wear pants while in the store" I would say without even joking you would get people who would comply.
You're dead on. People are following direction WAY too blindly without even questioning it. It's crazy. Where I'm at and the store I was shopping in, there's a sign at the door that says, "due to local mandate masks are required" and similarly 90+% of the people are wearing them. Slowly though I can see more and more people ignoring it.
I remember when the door sticker showed the store hours, now it's so covered in bullshit propaganda I completely ignore anything doors say.
No joke!
I regularly visit/shop at businesses in my county and the one south of me and one north of me.
Almost all stores have signs requiring تغطية الوجه.
Two of the three counties have gay mandates (sounds redundant).
I oppose تغطية الوجه yet have never been confronted or denied service.
To your point I do see more customers and staff opposing تغطية الوجه.
Here in Wyoming I have only had to wear a mask at doctors office or hospital.
So, in places where there are sick people. lol Certain places like that it doesn't bother me and almost makes sense. Healthy people walking around a grocery store pretending everyone is sick is bizarre.
Is it 1997 again?
😂 there’s like 500 of them in Oregon, Washington and DC/Baltimore area. Almost 2000 total under various other banners (Albertsons, carrs, randals, jewel-osco, etc).
Haha. It's an Australian thing. Victoria used to have Safeway until they were all rebranded as Woolworths about 20 years ago.
You have Woolworths in Australia? We had them here in Michigan about 40 years ago, they disappeared. They were more of a department store here, cloths, shoes, kitchen items, toys, toiletries.
Lol they must have swapped. They are the biggest supermarket chain here next to Coles.
I remember when I was about 12 years old, I got caught shop lifting a fishing lure from there, that was 45 years ago. My mother wasn't very happy with me, lol.
Oh, no kidding!
Good job!! I've only worn a mask 1 time in the last 6 months myself. And that was to a funeral home that had a mask policy, so out of respect for the family I wore it as I did not want to cause a scene. Grocery store, gas station, etc anywhere else and I go in mask less. Its about 60/40 here unmasked/masked when I go into places.
Dang. It's mostly masked around here. We have a mask mandate by the governor until February, I think. Mandates aren't laws though and the county sheriff where I live said they aren't going to enforce it. I've spoken to the mayor and chief of police for the city and they're in the same camp to not enforce it. Sounds like an optional mandate to me!
Mandates are not laws! Be American and stand for what you believe in. Be American in every facet of your life. Do it all, unapologetically! The more people that go mask less the more people feel stupid for doing it.
100%! Even though it's happening slowly I can see more and more people not wearing them when I go out. It's only a matter of time before the scale tips and the people still wearing masks will look like like absolute clowns. Right now I give everyone a pass; I was wearing a mask up until a few months ago. It took a while to realize I didn't need to. People are starting to figure it out.
