I'll be honest, I've heard some homeless people will specifically get PUT in prison because they want a meal and place to stay. Depending on where you live, the real world and the outside elements can be worse than prison.
About 20 years ago, I had a 'street person' body slam me to the ground out nowhere on a busy sidewalk in broad daylight. Witnesses said he actively targeted me. He was arrested and I found out he had been in prison multiple times. And he went to jail for assault. It was amazing. He did it right in front of the cops.
