How does being Canadian stop you from getting a gun?? Seriously, have you even looked into it? I am Canadian, and armed to the teeth. Not saying don't get a knife, just that it doesn't have to be your only option. And no, you don't need your PAL to get a crossbow.
When I was a kid my friends and I all had wrist rocket sling shots. They work remarkably well, we even set up "wrist rocket ranges" to practice shooting bottles and cans. Would make a nice supplement to the sharp knives....

Wrist rockets are great tools as well. Get a sturdy one and put spear gun rubbers on it and shoot through a 1/4" plywood.
Canada, from my understanding, didn't ban shotguns.
You can still get 12-gauge shotguns in Canada. They are not part of the May 2020 "ban" on guns.
I would seriously think about that option before knives of any sort.
A 12 gauge shotgun is arguably the finest choice of firearm for a prepper.
