I have this soft, pigmented (it’s a white, raised keloid scar) right on the border of my bottom lip/like right next to my lip due to a very nasty infection from accidentally biting my lip. But now it has tanked my confidence because looking at my lips the bumpy scar tissue right next to it sticks out and I don’t know what to do. I’ve already struggled enough with self esteem issues, acne, scars, and not being “pretty enough” like other girls struggle with. Unless they were blessed LOL. I’ve tried every scar cream, lotion, treatment under the sun BESIDES surgery because I cannot afford it. Is there any way out of this constant struggle ? How can I force my insurance to pay for it ? If any of you have had a small scar removed/excised how much did it cost so I know what to expect to pay? Btw my insurance is BlueCross/BlueShield :///// I’m trying to save up so I can get my confidence back but I am also afraid they won’t be able to fix it because it’s on the corner of my lip. And keloids grow back too. I just want them to fix it or at least make it look better than it looks. I fucking hate my appearance because of it. Sorry to be a doomer I just thought maybe someone could help me if they’ve been through a similar situation. :/

DANG!! I feel for you. I never got bit in the dick, but I got attacked by a pitbull on Xmas night 2020. Tore up my ass cheek really bad. After 4 days it looked like the most disgusting large black puncture bruise ever. I walked into my house after it happened, limping. My gf has a great sense of humor and said "why you limping you puss?" I turned around and showed her my shredded pants and she started crying lol. Getting bit by a mad dog is no joke. Hurts like hell.
.....dude
Wow. Never heard of pit bulls being cattle dogs. Might improve their reputation if more people knew that. (not the ass biting bit...lol)
I think you have confused two different stories.
Lol, you're right. I thought they were coming from the same person. My bad. But imagine pit bulls herding cattle......
Wow, what a story. I have always wondered if something like this has happened. You have a great attitude. I'm glad it all worked out and healed so well.
Wow. Have to say that's the best one yet to get a girl to check you out, Lol.
I have skin grafts from 3rd degree burns on my arms and torso. For years I always wore long sleeves. Until I realized it doesnt matter I am who I am. You scars simply show others battles you have been through. Most people dont have these scars on the outside, but they do have pain from battles hidden beneath.
When people stare they are just curious.
Be strong, own yourself, you are perfect as is.
This. A close friend had a small keloid scar on her shoulder from a bike accident - about the size of a quarter. She was really self-conscious about it though when wearing sleeveless shirts. She tried to have it removed, and it grew back much larger. Now the keloid is about as big around as a coffee cup - it covers almost her entire shoulder.
She wishes she would just have left it alone when it was small. They are very hard to excise without them 'rebelling' and coming back larger.
It’s only a small patch of scar tissue thankfully. Is there anything I can do? It hurts my confidence so bad despite my partner telling me how much he loves me and how beautiful I am. I’ve always struggled with confidence. :/ I’ve tried scar tissue creams, silicone keloid creams and patches and nothing worked. v.v surgery/excision is the only thing I can think of as my last ditch effort to fix my scar. That, or get a lip ring and use the ring to hide the scar.
Find a good makeup artist. They may have a few tricks up their sleeves.
I sympathize, my smallpox vax blew up into a pop-bottlecap sized pink blob that embarrassed me until I was 13 and got a doctor to inartfully remove it. Now it looks like a normal 3" knife wound scar .The point is, it bothers people to see something weird. Insurance has to be convinced of a medical necessity--maybe you could find a sympathetic doctor who says it's for your mental health, or it might be precancerous and needs to be biopsied out of existence. I warn you though, if you once get a keloid you might get more, and as u/WormSign says they go deep AND right next to the lips is very tricky as only a tiny distortion is going to cause another look, a little quirk or twist that might be cute or might look like a snarl. You probably can get a consulting evaluation from a cosmetic surgeon for not too much. Don't rush. Talk to several.
You're perfect just the way you are.
This is an easy and inexpensive fix. Have your dermatologist (or a doctor who has done this before) inject Kenalog into the scar along the line of it. Done properly, it will flatten the keloid and fade the scar. (Too much and the scar will “sink in” leaving a depression in the skin.) It may take up to 3 months to see the full results, and may require a second Kenalog injection treatment.
Source: A family member had this done for a keloid C-section scar (by their OBGYN), and another family member had it done after a necessary breast surgery (the scar healed keloid).
Edited to add this medical article. Look under the section titled “CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS“:

It’s tough to tell you to just be confident, because I had a keloid inside my lower lip from falling flat on my face, tooth right through it. Every time I smiled I looked lopsided and it busted my confidence. I get you.
I doubt insurance would cover it, but you could check. I had mine fixed for $500 from a plastic surgeon, and I also couldn’t really afford it. He was very understanding and allowed me to make payments of $50 a month, and my confidence was worth it.
If the consultation is free, just to get your foot in the door, someone might help you.
The keloid I have is kind of soft but it’s very pigmented and textured and you can see the bumpiness of it next to my bottom lip I think it looks horrible. Did the surgeon really fix your keloid? Did it grow back? What surgery did you get?
You probably notice it more than anyone else, but it must be hard for you to not look at it every time. Maybe less looking in the mirror might help too ;)
My keloid was inside of the lip actually, so it just affected the outline of my smile. Several years later, I feel the scar, but it’s no where near as large as it was. He called it a scar revision, he excised it, and stitched it back up all in about 5 minutes. I think the key is to allow the new scar to heal smoothly (be healthy, vitamins, no smoking, etc.).
Oh okay thank you for the reply. It’s a small rounded keloid and it’s white as hell/very pigmented and textured like the bothersome keloids are. It’s on the very bottom of my lip in the corner like on the very corner where you smile. It’s half way on my lip and extends down under the corner of my lip. It’s very bothersome. Do you think excision could make it look better and less noticeable? At least form a smaller, flatter scar? You had success with a keloid so I am slightly hopeful.
I’d get that free consultation to find out for sure. Just try not to let it get you down too much!
I’m thankful to have my partners undying support no matter what but thank you so much :) I’m gonna rack up some money and get it done. My biggest fear is spending money on the surgery and it does absolutely nothing and I spent a ridiculous amount and it’s wasted.
Just remember you’re awesome, scars and all!
Facial scars are sexy and make you REAL.
RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) has been known to help reduce scarring it has helped reduce a cyst on my wrist, it definitely removes skin tags and cures skin cancer in 30 days, I'd give it a try.
And I just want to say my partner has said I am beautiful just the way I am but I personally want to do this for myself.
I once split my lip strait open from top to bottom after a high fall, I was a teenager. They had to sow it back together. My smile is now lopsided and the scar is still visible. I was self concious about my smile for a long time and suppressed my smile because of it. It's been almost 30 years since my fall. I've learned to live with it and the older I get the less I give a shit. Sorry, not the best advice, but my perspective is we tend to worry about things that don't really matter in the long run in life, and we'd be better off focusing on the real important things like our internal health and relationships, instead of tiny details about our outward appearance.
I've never found a beautiful woman to be ugly because of a superficial "flaw". That's silly. I get it, but it's silly. 😁
Thanks for your honesty in displaying your emotions. It's very attractive.
Good luck!
I have some bad scars on my chin that I used to obsess about but then I grew a beard. Would a beard or mustache cover and or distract from the scar?
I think she said she's female! But a beard would definitely distract in that case...
I am :) if I was trans maybe LMAO but I don’t think my partner would like me anymore if I turned into a dude 😆
You are correct, she used the word “girl” so she can’t grow a beard but she is allowed to use makeup.
Well, she will just have to change her mind set.
She should read up on former SNL star Tina Fey and how she dealt with the serious facial scarring from a knife attack.
Aw. I understand! There is no way around this: Bite the bullet and go to a dermatologist and get the info you need so you know the cost of removal. Ask about not surgical; can they do freeze method on that spot? Get a written estimate. Then you can have an idea what your ins would cover after your deductible. But here is something else to consider - topical use of ivermectin paste has caused improvements in some gnarly skin situations, growths etc. And might be worth doing. But FIRST, take it internally plus zinc (zinc w a meal). I took my dose based upon weight, daily for 5 days. And again in 10 days, to clobber the parasite life-cycle. A lot of weird skin things are the result of parasites. (Durvet brand Ivermectin, Duramectin. Valley Vet Supply. Not medical advice, just advice from a fren
One of the best ways, but also the most time intensive, way to get rid of scar tissue is to massage the area for 10 minutes a few times a day. This allows the scar tissue to soften and break apart little by little. Since it is on your lip, I would recommend a natural moisturizer as well, such as coconut oil once you are done massaging the area.
It may not be quick, but it will definitely help in reducing the appearance of the scar.
I'm not sure if this is accurate for your insurance, but if it is affecting your confidence to such a degree that it has negative psychological effects on you, they might cover it because it is necessary for your mental well-being.
BlueCross BlueShield can be dicks. I doubt they would care about my mental health. I think I’m gonna have to suck it up and pay out of pocket for it. Which, I will save up for it, but I also have fears that they won’t be able to fix it and I am doomed looking into the mirror hating myself.
I see. Why don't you make a give send go? I can't give much but we can all help you out a little bit!❤️
Aw you guys don’t have to do all that! I’m a seller on Mercari recently actually so I’m trying to save up to buy this serum that was developed by plastic surgeons :) if none of that works, then I will start stretching my options on surgery and what to do next but thank you guys so much I really appreciate how sweet everyone is.
Hey, we are here for each other!! If you change your mind, let us know! :) I hope this serum will work for you! Bless you.
Thank you so much! The serum is RescueMd and the small bottle is 88$ and the big bottle is a whopping 388$! For those prices, I am hoping it will do something. It’s developed by plastic surgeons, has great reviews, pics, and it seems promising. Oh, and I think if you don’t like it, there’s a 30 day guarantee of money back
Sounds promising, I really hope it works for you!!
Thank you!
Thank you guys for all the replies. I have a plastic surgeon near me thankfully. I hope they can help me.
Thank you! I am going to talk to my partner about working out a plan and go have it done. I have refused to go get it done simply for the fact I read that scar surgery can cost 1500!!! 🤭
It sounds like if it wasn't this scar that you hyper focused on, it'd be something else.
I'm gonna let you know a secret about men - we love the imperfections. We love tooth gaps and snaggleteeth and weird moles and shit like that. A little imperfect mark makes women more beautiful to us. Just work on yourself, find a good man, and try not to focus on conditional things like "life would be so perfect, if only..."
I have a perfect man and he tells me this scar doesn’t matter but as a woman, I can’t help but focus on all the negatives about my face :( but I do love him and he’s absolutely perfect so I try to see from his point of view <3
Was the scar on the lip/beside the lip or on the inside?
Guys love scars on women. Real guys. If it's a keloid I'm not sure what you can do to remove or reduce it. Remember it's all in your head and people focus too much on appearance. The best looking women I've dated were also the most batshit crazy.
Do a research on DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide). I make a solution that comprises 70% DMSO, 25% distilled water and 5% Lugol's iodine 5%. Worked wonders for my scars. It can have a warming effect and a temporary itching sensation but otherwise harmless and highly beneficial. I am no doctor. YMMV. Best of luck to you.
Thank you, that’s helpful, what scars did you have? Keloids or anything like that? This scar is slightly raised, white and it’s prominent. You can tell it’s there.
If it's only slightly raised there are make up products that can disguise it until you opt for surgery. Several brands make them, they're kind of putty/spackle like. But if you search for a company that makes stage makeup you'll do better. They can totally transform faces, cover tattoos etc.
Many scars(lol). But the most relevant in this case is a vertical scar I had on top of my upper lip, running from the tip of my nose to the top of my upper lip, about 7 mm (1/4in.) wide, gotten in a bicycle accident. It is now but an unnoticeable remnant of its former self, with just a trace of it on the edge of my upper lip, where a few whiskers of my mustache are not growing back (yet). Mind you, this resorbing of the scar tissue takes a while, a few years in my case, or as long as it takes your skin to regenerate itself. I would apply the solution multiple times a day.
