I know there have been a few discords out there that have been shut down..
But how about those old school chat rooms from back in the day? Any of those floating around?

Anons should avoid chat rooms that can log your activity or leak personal information like your IP address.
Session Messenger is about the strongest privacy messenger I can think of. You can create groups to chat in. Just don't enter your name or details when creating a profile.
Matrix & Element are two other options. (matrix clients are available on fdroid btw)
No HTTPS.
Anyone not behind a VPN should avoid following that link.
Also has trackers.
...sorry, it was just something that I had bookmarked from reddit days....
...deleted forevermore...
It would be cool to start an mIRC chat room! Kick it with the Frens, old school style!

If I'm not mistaken there's no IP protection for those not behind a VPN.
I get what you're saying, however that's also the reality if you're using the internet in general without a VPN.
I don't want anyone getting ddos'ed or what have you. Session Messenger or Jitsi would probably be a safer suggestion.
Great suggestions to add to the toolchest, thank you!
getting ddos'ed is just part of the fun of IRC
You can set up a Matrix server for free. It's E2E, meaning it's quite safe.
There's also a GuiIded and T.me server. You can find threads about it everyday, though it's less about politics.
fires up BitchX
...true that....
I'm not sure how to really use that. Would love to try it out though!
https://www.mirc.com
It's a fun "wild west" chat app from internet 1.0. It's still going strong with many internal communities that have been around since the inception of the app.
What server do I join? How do I join a random chat? Default seems to be Libera and doesn't work
They have a security topic available for digest:
mIRC and SSL
There are too many features to list and admittedly I haven't joined an mIRC chatroom since 2005! LOL
However, if you download and install the app, you get a full readme. The app isn't fancy and looks like it jumped straight outta Windows XP, but it's a good way to connect with people and start servers.

Although as pointed out below, Discord is also an option that is viable.
I have to pay for a $20 user license :(
How about Element? It is like a privacy-friendly version of Discord.
Element | Secure collaboration and messaging
https://element.io
Element is a Matrix-based end-to-end encrypted messenger and secure collaboration app. It's decentralised for digital sovereign self-hosting, or through a hosting service such as Element Matrix Services. Element operates on the open Matrix network to provide interoperability and easy connections.
I haven't heard anything bad about Matrix or Element. Should be solid.
I've used it, it looks and works a lot like Discord. Have had no problems with it so far but haven't tried group chats.
This thread from 2003 is a good summation of this :)

So I tried out mIRC but all the channels I went to are dead! Gotta find some live chats.
Ok that's good to know

Hook a fren up
Requires gstatic.com and google.com domains to be unblocked. Sorry!
Wow really? Nvm then
ublock origin is your fren. block all g domains on all websites. profit.
Do you have a good video or link for using and setting up ublock?
None that I have looked at, but there are plenty I'm sure. Depending on your comfort level with techie stuff, and your willingness to manually enable domains on certain websites, you can either use the "set and forget" setting or the more hands-on "expert mode" approach. There's a learning curve with the latter but it offers the most protection.
For example, I set up ublock origin to block all 3rd party scripts across all domains. This breaks many websites so you have to figure out which blocked domain(s) are essential to load the page, and whitelist them. Many times these essential domains contains "cdn" or "js" in the domain, like cdn.cloudflare.com. It can be a trial and error- this is the biggest learning curve. Good news is once you figure it out, you can save it and ublock origin will remember to whitelist those domains next time you visit.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg. If you're serious about privacy, consider spoofing your user agent, masking your referrer, using a browser that doesn't collect and sell your data, and best of all using a VPN.
Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.
