We talk a lot about term limits, but what if we do this. We set the term limits crazy high... I'm talking 50+ years.
HOWEVER, If as a lawmaker any law they voted yes for is repealed by the courts then time is removed from their term limit. In other words when they make shit laws they pay for it in a way that really hurts. They get less time making laws.
Same for judges maybe? Give them a long term limit but if they get reversed on appeal then their term limit is lowered by a year or two.
With a system like this the good judges and good law makers stay for a long time and the crappy ones get limited out of office earlier.
It would need some checks and balances etc but I think it would work quite well at keeping corruption down.

Agreed. Who are the ones that are arbitrating what is acceptable and what is not? Corruption breeds more corruption and the shit definitely rolls downhill.
VERY TRUE! But if we had a clean system a setup like this would make it harder for the system to ever get as bad as it is now. Just because it won't fix our current problems completely doesn't mean its not worth putting in place.
My only fear about a setup like this is that they would rig things to setup people to lose a bunch of term limit so they can get rid of good people. However when you think about it that doesn't really work for lawmakers. You need at least 50% vote to get a new law passed so a shit-ton of people get dinged if that law gets repealed. They won't vote yes if its a crap law so it wouldn't pass. Its self correcting. Lawmakers would actually READ the law before they voted yes.
Judges are a little more tricky. There is some room for abuse there.
We don't need more checks on the system, we need less system.
not a bad idea.... just like a drivers license... if you screw up... you lose points.. if you really fuck up... then you walk to the nearest wal-mart to look for a job. it's time to treat the politicians the same way the treat us!
