I may have been watching this movie for too long, but birds getting in the way of energy weapons trying to take down StarLink constellation sats was the first thing that came to mind.
It could have been an airplane. I saw the results of a twin prop plane flying through a cloud of sparrows. A huge parking lot was covered in their dead bodies.

I feel like that would have been reported and it wouldn't be such a "mystery" since they track/log everything an airplane deals with.
