Chernobyl itself was definitely not a cover-up. Afterwards, as a forbidden zone, it could easily been set up for any secret repository: documents, (bio)weapons, whatever.

If Russia did in fact damage or destroy any part of these old nuclear facilities, would that expose or release any dangerous chemicals or radiation to the surrounding area or to the atmosphere?
And if so, why would they do something so stupid?

I seem to remember a while back some videos on YouTube of people exploring the exclusion zone around Chernobyl, and some areas were off-limits and I think guarded. Can't be due to the radiation hazard - the Geiger counters serve that purpose. It's looking more likely there was some sort of secret installation hidden there. Time to dig through old Chernobyl exploration videos.
