The AK was probably real enough, but I think the magazine is inserted by the front edge being entering first so a retaining lip is engaged, then rotating the magazine back and up to engage the latch with the back edge. They may have done the first motion but not the second. Which supports the idea that the guy was not trained in the care and feeding of the rifle.
