Just make sure to relocate port 22, and disable password authentication (public key auth only), and that mitigates 99% of the threat surface.
Try and avoid windows or even Mac and Linux in the DMZ if possible. Put some low powered thing in the middle and run a variety of BSD on it.
BSD won’t fix all security threats, but it will force you to learn the real nuts and bolts of TCP/IP, and then confidently protect what you want to protect.
VPN IP ranges are often scanned. Sometimes by the VPN provider. If anything it's likely to be an increase in botnet activity or a worm attempting to spread. If I was going to scan for target machines I absolutely would scan every IP on the VPN subnet. VPN providers and ISPs often scan to monitor traffic and services being used.
If your machine powers on and "logs on to the net" (how do you define that process exactly) by itself, I would be 1) surprised 2) certain you have malware on your machine.
What is alerting you to these attacks? Please don't say a software antivirus/firewall. These products instill fear as a way to keep you subscribed.

I was just making a simple point, that I was showing a large number of scans and my machine was attacked that day. That's all, and i wondered if I was the only one seeing it.

I didn't want or need a complete analysis of all possibilities of what it could or couldn't be.

Again, I already know ALL this, don't 'rely on' or even USE a VPN normally because of it. It DOES keep the iP from the snoop, but the VPN knows it.
