Criminals are very resourceful and are better at reading people. It’s a different kinds of intelligence. And considering how many people fell for the covid scam I disagree with your statement. Yes your average tech worker knows a lot of “book smart” things but that’s the thing they can just regurgitate what they learned in college. How many of them are making original content? Most of them are drones. I’ll take the criminal over the average person in a survivial situation any day.
I really wanna mention something that validates this, so I have to admit I did a year in jail a few years ago (first and only time)...
But yeah one of my cellies taught me how to make a razor blade out of an AA battery. There are many other examples but that one stands out.
I was in the joint too. I can make a shank from soap and a plastic cup. Not something I am proud of but it is what it is.
It's crazy how much of a whole different world it is.
Oh, I have another good one: a small flame/burning paper may be started (to light a rolled cigarette) by smashing up some pencil lead/graphite and rolling it up in paper, placing that in a bowl and microwaving it. And then getting back to your cell with it within a few seconds lol.
Not something to do often cuz other inmates will get mad, but I could never light anything using the battery method.
4 years of incarceration should be capable of churning out folks with college degrees or vocational life skills to make a future living on, if prisons were really meant to reform, not just to punish.
Not everyone wants to learn, or is capable of learning, but the option should be there.
