Sick of Banks. How to pay bills without a bank?
posted 3 years ago by cryofreeze 3 years ago by cryofreeze +26 / -0

Anyone have ideas on how to pay bills if you close your bank accounts? Banks are the enemy.

Smaller credit unions. Best bang for your buck, and their smaller size means they are also (generally) willing to treat you like an individual person, with individual needs and requirements.

At least up here.

To really close all bank accounts, this is the answer. The alternative is that you would be using check cashing places (far more expensive) and either traveling to where the various bills can accept money, or sending money orders.

Not really an option if you plan on having a mortgage at some point unless you seriously luck out and manage to land a private mortgage.

I use a small credit Union, for 30 years, but I also, for years, did not have any kind of cards, I would keep some in savings, but I would use cash to buy USP postal checks to pay bills. I did that for years, being a luddite and all. Credit cards just lure me into that cycle of buying things I want, but don't need, so I stopped, had a small balance, paid it off and did not renew. I do have a debit card from my credit union now, only because it's impossible to travel without one. I buy silver and keep emergency cash at home, which I add to as if it were a saving account. I feel that it is safe. Business like utilities will take a money order same as a check.Only problem not having some credit is if you want to sign up for some utilities, they check credit now, and if there is nothing to check, they can be jerks. It can be done if you are fine with living simply and not buy into the consumerism, it's hard, there's lots of shiny things out there.

Utilities around here just charge you an "estimated" month's usage to sign up. Then give it back whenever you cancel, meaning they get an interest-free loan for years.

Very true. Open a local credit union account. Don't use a bank. Retain just enough of a balance to keep your account open. You can pay your bills at the bank by purchasing money orders, Or by ordering a check book from the credit union and paying bills at home. Post office money orders can also be purchased to pay bills. All of this requires mailing the letter using USPS. Yea, it's the old fashion lick the envelope and put a stamp on the billing envelope. It's really one of the best ways of paying your bills. The worst method of paying bills is by using the computer and a credit/debit card.

First thing to know is that there are plenty of options. You can work with your utility company and pay months in advance. Use the utility company as sort of a bank. Money sitting in a saving/checking account doesn't make enough interest to offset inflation anyway. Why not use the utility company for this purpose? My wife is always overpaying on bills and the extra amount is used toward the next month billing. One time we foresaw some economic problems and we decided to pay 3 months in advance on the gas/electric bill so we wouldn't have to worry about it if things got worse. Paying in advance will help eliminate paying every month. Mortgages can be amortized saving tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a 15/30 year plan just by paying more than your monthly mortgage rate. All of this can be worked out with your utility provider and elsewhere.

Assuming they still take cash. Which probably isn't for very much longer...

Yeah, good luck with that. There's no federal law requiring a biz to take cash as payment. Plenty of places of biz have been no cash long before today and nothing has happened. Starbucks is doing it now (or soon), many more to follow...

Don't be a dumbass... I didn't say anything about GOING to Starbucks. The point is that Starbucks is only the beginning of the trend towards a cashless society. It will be difficult for OP to accomplish his goal.

Why advertise for them then... kek. No name kills thier game. For instance you could of said some Satanic cofefe shop. Which then changes the narrative in our direction. O.o all hard roads have the most rewards.

Just open an account with the minimum amount needed to pay your bills, do the leg work to keep the account above the minimum to not incur fees. Find the bank with the lowest minimum for an account.

Save yourself the work from having to go to various offices to pay for utilities.

This is really your only reasonable middle ground here because you're paying for gas and time with having to go across all the different offices just to maintain magical cash transactions. You're not going to win this way...

You can bring cash to western union places, you can pay your local power,tv gas a lot of times directly or the utility has a office you can goto and pay.

Around here, you can't use plastic to pay water or electric. It has to be cash or check.

Yes. And on top of that, our local phone office stopped taking payments at all, so they have to be mailed. The main problem I have with mailing is that I have to mail early to be certain of getting it to them on time, and every day it's early is interest they can make on my money. I used to pay all my cash bills at the very last minute because of that. I know it's almost nothing now, but when I was younger, bank interest was a lot higher. It averaged a whole 4% when I was in school.

Yes they make it hard to pay with cash. I would mail it early a week or two interest is less than the late fee,I suspect.

You can buy a prepaid debit card. You just load it up with the amount of money you want on it and you can use it to pay your bills. You will have to wait until they send you the official card with your name on it to pay some bills, but that only takes about 7 to 10 days. I used to have one that I used to shop online. There are fees but there are fees with a bank monthly.

You can always post money order or even take cash when they have physical locations open.

But let me say, kudos to you for doing this. If everyone of us took down our accounts with big banks and operated with cash every day, the Cabal would have no power over us.

My humble suggestions;

  • Everyone should keep a good chunk of cold, hard cash at home, outside of the banks.

  • Everyone should have at least some Precious Metals; Gold & Silver, maybe others like Platinum or similar if you are so inclined.

Just common sense. And I echo that small, local credit unions are the way to go.
