The idea is to make sure your body has had enough clean iodine so it rejects any radioactive iodine131 and excretes it because the stores are already full. I don't see why Lugols wouldn't work, but maybe do your own research rather than take my word for it.

Wait, really? It doesn't have to be potassium Iodide specifically?
Potassium iodide only really prevents ONE KIND of radiation injury, to the thyroid.
Lugol's contains potassium iodide as well as iodine. I can see it in the ingredients list on my bottle.
