I remember being confused when I was a kid about why American blacks were protesting Sambo's restaurant chain, since 1) the kid was Indian; 2) the story was in India, and 3) Sambo was the hero protagonist anyway. It was a good lesson about a lot of things.
Little Black Sambo was my favorite book my mom read to me before bed. When she turned 65, I gifted her a copy that was identical to the one she read me from the 1950's. Nothing in it was racist.
Black Sambo was a hit when I was a kid. Also, Uncle Remus.
I can't remember if that was before the "black is beautiful" mantra? Which would be a candidate for #4 on your list.
Good point. I think it came right in the awkward transition after the empowering "Black is Beautiful" message but before the less empowering yet more lucrative "all blacks are oppressed and need reparations" Jesse Jackson days.
I'll just leave this here.
It's South Park, BTW.
I doubt any of the shows writers ever heard the original version.
Good point. I bet they had to do a deep history dive.
